Interviewer: And what was your last holiday like? Susan: Marvellous, absolutely marvellous. We went to Rome and we met up
with some very nice people from Manchester. We looked round the city together and saw all the sights – the Colosseum and St. Peter’s … And on the way back to England we stopped off in Paris and spent a couple of days there. We had a marvellous time.
Interviewer: And how important are holidays to you? Andy: Oh, it’s good to get away from it all and forget all your worries and
problems, even if it’s only for a few days.
4
Interviewer: So could you tell me about your last holiday?
Sheila: It was a complete disaster, and it was a pity, because I was really look-
ing forward to it. The plane didn’t take off on time – it was delayed six hours! The flight was awful – I suffered from air-sickness all the way. My hotel room was small and dirty. I complained about it to the manager and I insisted on having a different room, and I even succeeded in getting one, but it was just the same!
Interviewer: Goodness, it sounds terrible. Sheila: I was really disappointed with the beach – it was ugly and miles from the
hotel. No, the whole thing was a complete disaster. In the end I couldn’t wait to get back home.
Interviewer: So you weren’t at all satisfied with your holiday? Sheila: No, I wasn’t. I’d never go back there again! Interviewer: And how important are holidays to you? Sheila: Very. I love visiting beautiful places. That’s why I was so angry about the
holiday and with the man who booked it for me.
Interviewer: Yes, I’m sure you were. Which company did you book your holiday with? Sheila: Sun Tour Holidays. Interviewer: Oh …

Ex. 10 Brian and Thelma have just returned from their honeymoon in Barbados. They had a terrible time and they have just had their first big argument. Read the report of the argument in Thelma’s diary.
Septembe
24 Sunday
Brian and I had our first big row last night – all about our honeymoon, of course. It was horrible. We shouted at each other. He told me that it was my fault that we’d gone to Barbados and that it had cost a fortune and had been the worst holiday he had ever had. I said that there was nothing wrong with Barbados, it was very beautiful, but the travel firms were to blame. Their brochure had promised all kinds of things about the hotel and it has all been lies. I told him that he had no right to blame me and I started crying. Brian said he was sorry and that he knew that it wasn’t my fault really. He said that he would go to the travel agent first thing in the morning and that he would tell them about everything that had gone wrong. I said that I would go, too, because I was going to ask for our money back or another holiday. Let’s see what happens tomorrow!!
Ex. 11 Act out their argument.

Student A
You are in Iceland. You booked the Travelco holiday and you were very excited, but there has been an awful mistake. At the airport a courier met you and took you to a group of people, who are, in fact, on a different Travelco holiday. This holiday is two weeks camping in Iceland, travelling in a minibus and cooking all your own food. You hate camping! You realised after a few hours that something was very wrong. You are furious. Ring the courier in Reykjavik and tell him / her what has happened. If you are not satisfied, demand to speak to the London office. You would like a free flight to London immediately and a refund.
Student B
You are a courier for Travelco in Reykjavik. You get an angry phone call from a customer who has somehow been taken on the wrong holiday. Find out what all his / her problems are. You know that the luxury holiday is fully booked and the best that you can offer him / her is that he / she stays on the camping holiday for four days, when he / she can join the next group for the luxury holiday. If this is not good enough, he / she will have to speak to the London office. For this, you need to get his / her name, address in London, holiday number and the phone number where he / she is ringing from. Check the details, then explain that the London office will call him / her back in five minutes. Ring the London office.
Student C
You are a manager at Travelco in London. You receive a call from a courier in Iceland asking you to ring a customer who has been taken on the wrong holiday. Get the details, then ring the customer, check his / her details (name, address, holiday number) and ask the details of the problem, then ask what he / she would like you to do. Offer to bring him / her back to London immediately, and explain that he / she can then take the holiday later in the year. You cannot give a full refund because the customer has had part of the holiday, i.e. flight to Iceland. Try to reach an agreement.

After the Holiday
Student A
Think of somewhere in your country that would be an ideal place to go on holiday. Now imagine that you are English and have just spent two weeks in this place. You are travelling home by bus from London when you get into conversation with the person sitting next to you (Student B), and end up talking about your holiday. Before starting, think about the following:
- where you went
- why you chose this place for a holiday
- how you travelled
- who you went with
- where you stayed
- how you spent your time
- who you met
- what sort of food you ate
- what the weather was like
- what souvenirs you bought
- how much the holiday cost altogether
- if you would recommend it to some-
one else etc.
When you are both ready, you can start. Student B begins.
