My paragraph on Minsk can only be uplifting. My first impression of your
city was your fresh city air and your clean city streets.
I was touched by and felt the appreciation your citizens have of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. The emotional impact of our visit to Khatyn,
the Great Patriotic War Museum and the Victory Day Parade itself were only
surpassed by the knowledge and respect of the heroes described by all
Minsk citizens we have met.
I am appreciative of the patience of your citizens to host foreigners
whose only Russian can be summed up in the phrases “Я не понимаю” and
“Я не говорю по-русски”. Shopkeepers have been quick to understand our
hand gestures, when what we want to purchase isn’t “кофе черный с са-
хар”. People have gone out of their way to make us feel at home. So to
everyone, I would like to say …
“Thank you, Minsk” … “СПАСИБО!”
