Speaker 1. How do you qualify this criminal case?
Speaker 2. Under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian
Federation this is a theft.
Speaker 1. How long did it take to investigate the case?
Speaker 2. About three months, if I’m not mistaken.
Speaker 1. Is the accused being prosecuted?
Speaker 2. Yes, he is. The moment the investigation was completed, the
case was turned over to court. At the trial the defendant had to plead guilty in
view of conclusive evidence.
Speaker 1. What sentence did the court pass?
Speaker 2. The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to two years in
prison.
Speaker 1. Did the accused appeal his conviction?
Speaker 2. Yes, he did. The fact is that the Court of Appeals turned it
down.
Task 7. Read the following situations, retell them and qualify the criminal

1. Nadia advertises designer handbags for sale at a discount on the auction
website eBay. Her postings include photos she pulls from other websites. She
asks that all buyers pay her by wire transfer to a foreign bank account. She
accepts payment from buyers but never sends them the handbags.

2. Joy Stone is furious to learn that his ex-girlfriend has become engaged
to another man. One day, Joy sees his ex-girlfriend sitting at a table in a

restaurant, showing her engagement ring to a companion. Joy rushes up to the
table, grabs the ring, runs outside, and throws the ring into a sewer pipe. The
ring is never found.
3. On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was mortally wounded while
driving in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. His apparent killer, Lee Harvey
Oswald, was killed by Jack Ruby before standing a trial. The Warren
Commission was called to investigate Kennedy's death and found that Oswald
had acted alone to kill Kennedy. Many officials argued, however, that there
were several gunmen. The FBI disagreed. Speculation continues to this day.

4. That happened on March 18, 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner
Museum. That criminal act against property is one of the most famous in the
world criminal history. The thieves stole a staggering $500 million worth of art,
which has never been found. The robbers dressed up as police and gained entry
to the museum on St. Patrick's Day, claiming to have gotten reports of
disturbance in the area. They tricked the guards to step away from their desks
and the alarm button, handcuffed, gagged and tied them, then left them in the
museum's basement. The theft marks the loss of some of the most iconic
artworks ever made, including those of names like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Manet,
and Degas.

house. However, the
circumstances are rather strange:

At the same time, James’s wife,
Nicola reported that during the last
few weeks he was very depressed.
Probably the most unusual part
of the story is that Mr Jonson’s dog,
a huge pit-bull, was also found dead
in his living room with a cut throat.
Nevertheless, the police together
with the medical experts have
difficulties, and at 2.30 on the expire day he consulted his solicitor. Then he
went out and caught a taxi. He asked the driver to make the note of the time,
2.50. Then he shot himself. Suicide used no to cancel an insurance policy
automatically. The company refused to pay the man’s family, and the court
supported them.
