CHAPTER 6
Business writing is straightforward and it focuses more on ideas being presented
rather than the manner of presentation. The author aims to move the idea forward by
choosing the proper structure, word choice, punctuation, graphics, and references.
Publishers have developed rules of style in order to ensure clear and consistent
presentation of written material. Editorial style concerns uniform use of such
elements as punctuation and abbreviations, construction of tables, selection of headings, citation of references, and presentation of statistics.
APA Style
Overview
The American Psychological Association (APA) citation and format style,
commonly known as APA Style®, is generally used to write and format research papers within Social Sciences (Psychology, Linguistics, Sociology, Economics, and
Criminology), Business, and Nursing. APA Style establishes written communication
standards relevant to the organisation of content, writing style, citing references, and
how to prepare a manuscript for publication in certain disciplines. In any case, writers
should consult the recent edition of Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association.
Common types of APA papers. There are two most common types of APA
papers: the literature review and the experimental report. Each has unique requirements concerning the organisation of content.
A literature review is defined as a critical summary of what the literature says
about your specific topic. Often student research in APA fields falls into this category
which typically contains such sections as the title page, an abstract (if necessary), introduction section, and a list of references. The length of a literature review and the
number of sources may vary based on course preferences.
As regards an experimental report, the structure is more complex than that used
for a literature review. In particular, it includes the following sections: the title page,
an abstract, the introduction, method, results, discussion, references, appendices
(if necessary), tables and / or figures (if necessary). These sections reveal the following information: why the topic is important, what the problem is, what you did
to try to solve the problem, what you found, what you think your findings mean. The
length of this report is generally determined by the scope of the research conducted.
General Format
APA papers should adhere to the general format described below. The general
format covers the basic page layout, title page, running head, abstract, and headings.
The basic page layout. Your paper should be typed and double-spaced
on standard-sized paper (8.5" × 11" = 21.6 cm × 27.9 cm), with 1" margins on all

98
sides. It is recommended to use 12 pt. Times New Roman font. The indent for starting a new paragraph is ½ inch equalling 1.27 cm.
Title page. The title page should contain the title of the paper, the author’s name,
and the institutional affiliation. Writers should type the title in upper and lowercase letters centered in the upper half of the page. The title may take up one or two lines but it
should not exceed 12 words in length or contain any abbreviations. Beneath the title,
type the author’s name: first name, middle initial(s), and last name. No titles (Dr.) or
degrees (PhD) are applicable. The next line presents the institutional affiliation, which
should indicate the location where the author(s) conducted the research.
Running head. The top of every page should contain the running head, or the
page header, as a shortened version of the paper’s title. To create the running head,
writers should insert page numbers flush right and then type TITLE OF YOUR PAPER in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head cannot exceed
50 characters including spacing and punctuation. It should be noted that the running
head should look different on the title page: Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER.
Running head: RESPONSE PAPER

99
Abstract. On the abstract page, the first line presents the centered word
Abstract. No indent is necessary for the next line which introduces a concise
summary of the key points of the research. The 150–250-word abstract should be
a single paragraph, double-spaced. The abstract should contain the research topic,
research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions.
Other information may include implications of the research and future work.
The abstract finishes with listing keywords from the paper. You should indent
a new line and type the italicised Keywords: and then present the keywords.
RESPONSE PAPER 2
Abstract
This response paper describes the situation with articles on science. Readers want to know
about new scientific discoveries. But press officers often change the results so
the discoveries are false in the news. The introduction includes the author and title
of the main article. There are also key ideas of the article as the basis of the response.
The next part of the response paper is a summary. It presents an overview of the key ideas.
The ideas include comparison of the original research on science and news articles. There
are a lot of bad news articles so it is important to identify good ones. This ability shows that
you a savvy science reader. Next, the response part explains my opinion about the key ideas. I find the author’s examples on these ideas interesting. I also write about my recommendations to become a savvy science reader. The recommendations are about the title of the
news article on science, uncertain scientific results, and analyzing the data. After that, there
are responses to two other articles. The ideas in the articles are based on the key ideas in the
main article. In the first response I write about shocking headlines in the press. Readers get
false information on science and trust such science news. In the second response I say about
academic journals which may publish bad papers on science. Fake news is a result of scien-
tists’ pressure to publish scientific data. The conclusion summarizes the key ideas of the main
article. The last part also shows my opinion about the future of news articles on science.
Keywords: science, news article, academic journal, savvy science reader, fake news.

100
Headings. The organisation of content specifies headings which allow guiding
the reader through a document. Five heading levels, which are not indicated by letters
or numbers, characterise sections and subsections of the paper:
Level
Format
1
Centred, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading
2
Left-aligned, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading
3
Indented, boldface, lowercase heading with a period.
4
Indented, boldface, italicised, lowercase heading with a period.
5
Indented, italicised, lowercase heading with a period.
It should be noted that the Introduction section never gets a heading. Also, APA
allows for seriation to help authors organise and present key ideas. The options include numbered seriation, using letters for seriation within sentences ((a), (b), etc.),
and bullets for lists that do not communicate hierarchical order or chronology.
RESPONSE PAPER
Response Paper
The article on science How to be a savvy science reader was written by Erik
Klemetti in 2016. The author tells us about misinterpretations of scientific discoveries
in the news. Only savvy science readers know how to find believable articles. To
become a savvy science reader is important. So I will try to use the author’s recom-
mendations to read news articles carefully.
Summary
The author explains that the original research has new findings in science. Such
findings make scientists solve new problems. Scientists often write about the need
to prove hypotheses in journals. Their findings need continued work and rarely pre-
sent certainty. In fact, it is important to publicize scientific results because people
want to know more about discoveries.
