Global warming, also referred to as climate change, is proved to be century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system, and its related effects. Climate model projections indicate that during the 21st century, the global surface temperature is likely to rise. Warming is expected to be greater over land than over the oceans and greatest in the Arctic, with the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Climate proxies show the temperature to have been relatively stable over the one or two thousand years before 1850, with regionally varying fluctuations such as the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. Global dimming, a gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth's surface, was observed from 1961 until at least 1990. Solid and liquid particles known as aerosols, produced by volcanoes and human-made pollutants, are thought to be the main cause of this dimming. They are known to exert a cooling effect by increasing the reflection of incoming sunlight5.

Unit 6. SEQUENCE OF TENSES (СОГЛАСОВАНИЕ ВРЕМЕН)
Не says that he needed help.
Не says that he will need help.
Не says that he needs help.
Не told me that he studied here.
She said she was preparing for a report.
34
The senior researcher said that the experiment had been redesigned. −
Форма Future-in-thePast образуется от соответствующих форм Future Tenses, но вместо вспомогательного глагола shall употребляется should, а вместо вспомогательного глагола will – would.
I thought I should know the effective method this time, but I was wrong. −
I knew that he must come to the University by 3 o'clock. −
The Professor told the students that polymer is a large molecule, or macromolecule, composed of many repeated subunits.
The process was faster yesterday than it is today. −
I knew that she left Kazan in 2016.
I knew that she had left Kazan some years ago.

Ex. 10 Read and translate the text paying attention to sequence of tenses.
Empedocles had formulated the classical theory that there were four elements: water, earth, fire and air, and Aristotle reinforced this idea by characterising them as moist, dry, hot and cold. Fire was thus thought of as a substance and burning was seen as a process of decomposition which applied only to compounds. Experience had shown that burning was not always accompanied by a loss of material and a better theory was needed to account for this. In 1667, Johann Joachim Becher published his book Physica subterranea, which contained the first instance of what would become the phlogiston theory. Terra pinguis was the element that imparted oily, sulphurous, or combustible properties. Becher believed that terra pinguis was a key feature of combustion and was released when combustible substances were burned. Becher did not have much to do with phlogiston theory as we know it now, but he had a large influence on his student Stahl. According to Stahl, phlogiston was a substance that was not able to be put into a bottle, but could be transferred nonetheless6.

Unit 7. CONDITIONAL MOOD (УСЛОВНОЕ НАКЛОНЕНИЕ)
If you make a mistake, the calculations will go wrong. –
If he asks me, I will try to answer his question. –
If I had more spare time, I would repeat my experiment. –
Для неофициального стиля типична фраза «If I were you…»
If you had called me, I would have come.
Would he have succeeded if I had helped him?
Had you called me, I would have come.
Would he have succeeded had I helped him?
If you had done your job properly, we wouldn't have so many errors now.
If I hadn't got this job, I wouldn't be living in Scotland now.
If we were physicists, we wouldn't have done it like that.
