or months; sports tourism packages usually include tickets to several
different games or matches that occur during the course of the tournament.
During lengthy trips, some fans have the option of adding excursions into
the travel package so that they can visit local tourist sites between sporting
events.

Many sporting events last for no more than a few hours and informal
sports tourism involves individuals traveling long distances to watch a
single matchup before returning home. Some of these independent travelers do not visit tourist sites or explore the area. In some instances, groups
of sports fans charter coaches or buses so that they can discuss the sport
on the way to the event and talk about the outcome on the way home. Fans
of some sports have been known to riot after sporting events and police in
such cities often escort people on sports tourism trips into and out of the
sports arena.
Aside from watching sports events, many tourists participate in sports
such as snorkeling, rock climbing and other types of outdoor pursuits.
In some instances, these individuals have to undergo some training before they can participate in certain activities. Some travel operators cater
to both serious sports participants and recreational travelers who want to
experience outdoor pursuits but who also want to tour historic sites and
participate in non-sports related activities.
Sports tourism can involve travel to sporting locations even when no
events are scheduled to take place. Many sports stadiums have museums
and schedule tours that enable sports fans to get a behind the scenes view
of their favorite sports teams.

Events such FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games are usually identied as global sporting events. When a city or nation is awarded the privilege of hosting a mega event, they are almost always required to enhance
54

or develop their infrastructure in order to accommodate the high volume
of visitors, which attend these events. Such tournaments can affect host
city both positively and negatively.
Pro’s of hosting a Mega Event: The privilege of hosting a mega event
such as the Olympics or Commonwealth Games allows the host to transform their city physically, socially and economically by providing the necessary tools to support the increased media exposure, which in turn may
lead to increased tourism to the destination.
Con’s of hosting a Mega Event: The Olympics have the ability to produce legacies such as regenerated urban areas, inspire the youth to participate in sport and create employment both pre and post event. However, the
success of these events, are dependent on the needs of the host community. Unfortunately, the Olympics bring great expense which is normally
utilised by the many benets that come from in the form of short term
economic gain and legacies. However, there have been examples of failure to achieve positive legacies from mega events, namely Montreal 1976
and Athens 2004.

They often connect with an academic subject or a personal interest. The

Exchange visits (Foreign languages). If they are learning foreign languages, students often go on exchange visits with students from a different
country. They stay with their partner’s family, and attend their educational
institution. They practice speaking the “other” language. Next holiday, or
next year, they do it the other way round.
These exchanges work best when there’s good communication and
contact before the visit. If it goes well, then it’s not only the foreign lan-

Disaster Tourism
Disaster tourism is the practice of traveling to areas that have recently
experienced natural or man-made disasters. Individuals who participate
in this type of travel are typically curious to see the results of the disaster
and often travel as part of an organized group. Many people have criticized disaster tourism as exploitation of human misery and a practice that
demeans and humiliates local residents. Others argue that tourism to devastated areas can offer a boost to the local economy and raise awareness
of the incident, both of which are often needed after a tragedy. It should
be noted that disaster tourism is separate and distinct from the efforts of
humanitarian groups who may bring in work crews from outside the area
to assist in cleanup, rebuilding, and provision of necessary services to
local residents.
When a geographical region suffers a major incident, the media may
spend a great deal of time reporting on the situation and the plight of local
residents. In some cases, this reporting can inspire curiosity in individuals
who may have difculty comprehending the magnitude of the situation.
