Good morning ladies and gentlemen! We haven't all met before so I'd better introduce myself. I'm Ann Tailor from the Sales Department of Sweets and Savouries Corporation. I should say before we start that I hope you'll excuse my English; I'm a little out of practice. Anyway, I'm going to be talking this morning about a new product which we are planning to launch in three months' time. It's called Chocoberry, and it's white chocolate with strawberry.

Well, I'll start with the background to the product launch; and then move on to a description of the product itself. Finally, I'm going to list some of the main selling points that we should emphasize in the advertising and sales campaign. I think if you don't mind, we'll leave questions to the end.

Now firstly, as you all know, we have had a gap in our chocolate product range for the last two years; we have been manufacturing dark chocolate for the last ten years, but we stopped producing milk chocolate two years ago. I think we all agreed that there was room on the market for a completely new product. Secondly, the market research indicated that more and more consumers prefer white chocolate. This brings me to my next point which is that we have a rather new customer-profile in mind. I must emphasize that this product is aimed at the high-income market. At this point we must consider the importance of packaging and design, and if you look at the video in a moment, you'll see that we have completely revamped package itself as well as the label and slogan. So to go back to my earlier point, this is a totally new concept as far as Sweets and Savouries Corporation is concerned. As you see we are using both the box of chocolate and the candygrams. Finally, let's look at the major attractions of the product. In spite of the higher price it will compete well with existing brands. The design is more modern than any of the current rival products, and the flavour is more natural. It's low calorie, too.

So just before closing, I'd like to summarize my main points again. We have Chocoberry, a new design concept, aimed at a relatively new age and income group. It comes in both boxes of chocolates and as the candygrams and this will mean a slightly higher selling price than we are used to; but the improved flavour and the package design should give us a real advantage in today's

83

market. Well, that's all I have today for the moment. Thank you for listening. Now if there are any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

3.5. Say which of Ann Tailor 's statements are true and which are false. Correct the false ones.

a) Sweets and Savouries Corporation manufactures

sausage

products.

b)We are planning to launch our product in three weeks' time.

c)The company's new product is a white chocolate with strawberry.

d)We have not produced a white chocolate for two years.

e)Everyone thinks there is a gap in the market.

f)The market studies prove that the market is shrinking.

g)Our aim is to have a new type of consumer.

h)The container design is the same.

i)The flavour is artificial.

j)The chocolate is going to be low-calorie.

3.6. Read and translate the following dialogues. Practice them.

a) Discussing a New Contract

Pavlov: Let`s go into the main question of our today`s discussion. I expect you want to discuss our new contract.

Green: That`s right. Have you seen our latest price-list?

Pavlov: Yes, we have. There is only one thing in it our parties can`t agree to. That is the 5 % increase in the price.

Green: Well, you must try to see the price from our point of view. Over the past three years metal prices have gone up. Besides because of the new labour contract, we had to increase wages. Therefore we had to increase the price of our machine-tools.

84

Pavlov: Yes, we have taken this into account and yet your prices seem to be high. We have been in business with your company for a long time and we hoped you would offer us better terms.

Green: I suppose if you could accept consignment (deliveries) by installments in the current year we would reduce the price by 2 %.

Pavlov: That is fine, thank you very much.

Green: Are you happy with the new terms and conditions of our future contract?

Pavlov: Yes, quite.

Green: Then I think we can start drawing up our contract.

b) At the office

Secretary: Mr. Reiman is waiting for you at the conference hall. It's the second door on the right.

Mr. Reiman: Good afternoon, Mr. Popov. It's good to see you. I hope your journey was informative.

Mr. Popov. Good afternoon, Mr. Reiman. Very informative I should say. I have some new details about our future mutual project.

Mr. Reiman: That's great! Sit down, please. Let's discuss the details. Would you like a cup of coffee or tea?

Mr. Popov: Yes, please. I'll have some coffee. The flight was uneasy, so I need additional source of energy.

Mr. Reiman: Lana, could you make hot coffee for Mr. Popov?

Secretary: Yes, of course. It will be ready in a few minutes.

85

Mr. Reiman: So, did you tell your CEO about the contract?

Mr. Popov: Yes, we did discuss the contract and it will be signed next week. He has no objections at all. On the contrary, he is interested in cooperation with your company.

Mr. Reiman: I'm glad to hear it. We have done all the necessary preparations for your comfortable stay, so anytime you feel tired, my secretary can drive you to the hotel and show you around the town.

Mr. Popov: Thank you, Mr. Reiman. That's very kind of you. I appreciate it. I'd like you to have a look at this price list. If everything is all right, we can sign the contract immediately. If you want to bring in some corrections, I'm ready to consider them.

Mr. Reiman: Let's see. In my opinion, the prices are fair. I'm ready to sign the papers.

Mr. Popov: Here they are. In a week's time they will be signed by our party as well. And, now I would like to have some rest. If you don't mind, I will be heading to the hotel room that you booked for me.

Mr. Reiman: Of course. I'll tell my secretary that you are ready to go. I hope to see you tomorrow fresh and rested, Mr. Popov.

Mr. Popov: Thank you for all your arrangements. See you tomorrow.

EMAIL IN BUSINESS

When you need to get an important message to a client or business associate who is located thousands of miles away, one of the fastest ways to do it is by email. The advantage email has over the telephone in communication speed is that you can send attachments

86

with an email that contain important documents. Thousands of email messages can be archived into folders on your computer. The convenience of email prevents you from having to keep file folders filled with papers and it makes your important correspondence portable. Aside from the cost of your Internet connection, email is free. You can send as many messages, files, videos, documents and presentations as you want without having to pay anything.

It would take a manual effort on the part of someone to access all of your important printed documents and destroy them. But all of your emails and important information can be lost with a simple hard-drive crash. If you store your email information on another server, then you could lose your data if that site goes down or out of business. When someone hands you a business letter, you are the only person that receives that letter. An email can be intercepted by a hacker or go to an incorrect email address and wind up in someone else's inbox. Your sensitive information and messages are very accessible to hackers and even unsuspecting recipients when you use email. A disadvantage of email is that people tend to treat it like a conversation because email can happen so quickly and they begin to use slang terms and try to carry on conversations via email. Because email recipients cannot see each other, the emails do not have any voice inflection or emotion that can help with proper interpretation.

JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT

A joint venture agreement is suitable for two or more businesses wishing to come together for a specific project for a specific length of time but who do not wish to be bound together indefinitely. For those wanting to work with someone on a more long term basis then a partnership agreement may be more appropriate.

The main advantages of a joint venture are independence, cheapness and simplicity as compared to a partnership agreement. There are great benefits to entering into a joint venture including: access to new markets and distribution networks; increased capacity and more resources; sharing of risks with your partner; access to specialized staff and technology. Success in a joint venture depends on thorough research and analysis of aims and objectives. These should then be incorporated into a written joint venture agreement. Trust forms a key element of successful joint ventures and agreeing exact terms when you set up your joint venture will help to minimise these risks and give the confidence to enter fully into your relationship without reservation.

The key clauses in a joint venture agreement include: the initial and future contributions of the joint venture partners; the structure of the joint venture, e.g. whether it will be a separate business in its own right or on a contract basis; management and control, e.g. respective responsibilities and processes to be followed; how liabilities, profits and losses are shared; resolution of disputes between the partners; sale and transfer of partnership status; ending the joint venture.

Certification process

A product might be verified to comply with a specification or stamped with a specification number. This does not, by itself, indicate that the item is fit for any particular use. The person or group of persons who own the certification scheme (i.e., engineers, trade unions, building code writers, government, industry, etc.) have the responsibility to consider the choice of available specifications,

89

choose the correct ones, set qualification limits, and enforce compliance with those limits. The end users of the product have the responsibility to use the item correctly. Products must be used in accordance with their listing for certification to be effective.

Product certification is often required in sensitive industry and marketplace areas where a failure could have serious consequences, such as negatively effecting the health and welfare of the people or person using that product. For example, certification is stringent in aerospace applications, since the demands for low weight tend to lead to high stress on components, requiring appropriate metallurgy and accuracy in manufacturing. Other sensitive product area examples include food, pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, dangerous goods, and products which have RF emissions such as computers and cellular telephones.

The process for certification of a product is generally summed up in four steps:

·Application (including testing of the product)

·Evaluation (does the test data indicate that the product meets qualification criteria)

·Decision (does a second review of the product application concur with the Evaluation)

·Surveillance (does the product in the marketplace continue to meet qualification criteria)

In many instances, prior to applying for certification, a product supplier will send a product to a testing laboratory (some certification schemes require the product to be sent out for testing by the product certifier instead). When the product to be certified is received at the testing laboratory, it is tested in accordance with the laboratory's internal procedures and with the methods listed in the test standards specified by the certification scheme. The resulting data collected by the testing laboratory, and is then forwarded either back to the manufacturer, or directly to the product certifier.

The product certifier then reviews the product supplier's application information, including the testing data. If the certifier's evaluation concludes that the test data shows that the product meets
