The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense (Прошедшее длительное время)

Образование

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в прошедшем времени и причастия настоящего времени смыслового глагола.

Причастие настоящего времени образуется путем добавления к основе смыслового глагола окончание –ing.

Ввопросительной форме прошедшего длительного времени вспомогательный глагол to be ставится перед подлежащим.

Вотрицательной форме прошедшего длительного времени отрицательная частица

not ставится после вспомогательного глагола to be.

Употребление

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense употребляется для выражения незаконченного, действия, которое происходило в определенный момент времени в прошлом. Этот момент может быть выражен либо обстоятельством времени (at that moment, then, at five o’clock yesterday, etc.), либо другим прошедшим действием,

выраженным глаголом в the Past Indefinite (Simple) Tense.

He was driving at five o’clock.

She was playing the piano when her husband entered the room.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense употребляется для выражения длительного действия, которое началось до определенного момента в прошлом и продолжалось в указанный момент. Этот момент может быть определен контекстом или ситуацией, т.е.

точное указание времени или начало другого действия выражены в предыдущем предложении или ясны из ситуации.

Пример:

I came to the station. My brother was waiting for me on the platform.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense употребляется для выражения действия,

которое непрерывно продолжалось в течение указанного отрезка времени с целью придания эмоционального оттенка длительности действия. Обычно в предложениях с таким значением употребляются слова all day (night и др.) long, the whole morning (day,

night и т.д.), all the time.

Пример:

I was reading all the day yesterday.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense употребляется для выражения двух длительных действий, которые происходили одновременно в течение одинакового промежутка времени.

Пример:

While he was speaking to the teacher I was waiting for him.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense передает идею длящегося действия и используется для описания.

Пример:

This morning was really beautiful. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and everyone in the street was smiling and saying hello to each other.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense употребляется в придаточных предложениях с глаголами движения для обозначения действия, которое было будущим относительно прошедшего, если смысловой глагол главного предложения употреблен в прошедшем времени.

Пример:

She said she was coming to see you after supper.

The Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense в эмоционально окрашенных высказываниях может употребляться и с наречиями, характеризующими постоянные, привычные действия,

вместо The Past Indefinite (Simple) Tense. Как правило, эмоциональный признак является негативным. В этом случае могут употребляться наречия always, constantly, ever.

The Future Continuous (Progressive) Tense

(Будущее длительное время)

Образование

The Future Continuous (Progressive) Tense образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в будущем времени и причастия настоящего времени смыслового глагола.

Причастие настоящего времени образуется путем добавления к основе смыслового глагола окончания –ing.

Ввопросительной форме будущего длительного времени вспомогательный глагол to be ставится перед подлежащим.
