Artistic Metal Processing
During the era of ancient art, metal objects were mostly functional and commonly included weapons, armour, items of equestrian equipment, eating vessels and utensils. Gradually, however, new processes were discovered that led to the creation of new and exciting
metallic forms of decorative art, made out of various metals (or combinations of metals), such as iron, copper, bronze, silver, gold and brass.
Repoussé and Chasing
The terms repoussé and chasing are often confused since the two techniques are often worked together. Repoussé is primarily a relief process (3-dimensionally oriented) whereas chasing is more often an intaglio (2-D or linear) technique. without changing the thickness of the starting sheet. This differs from chasing where the ability of metal to compress is used to create relief. Some areas are allowed to remain at their original height while other areas are compacted with tools to make them lower.
However, the two techniques are often used together. These techniques share several properties, among them the fact that they can be worked on tiny jewelry pieces or large architectural or sculptural work. In both cases hammers are used to press pencil-like steel tools against metal, forming or compressing it, or both. Both repoussé and chasing can be worked on all the conventional jewelry metals with ease. Such malleable materials as high karat gold, fine silver and copper respond very well, while brass, nickel silver and steel require greater effort.
Embossing
Embossing is an art form that has existed for centuries, and it is used to impart a design upon metal sheets. The metal is pushed with an embossing tool or stylus in order to create a raised effect on the opposite side. By placing the metal sheet on a rubber or foam pad, the positive impression has a smooth surface that will shine or can take pigment. Embossed metal sheets can be used to decorate items like tins, lanterns, windows or doors. Smaller pieces can also be used to decorate greeting cards or scrapbooks. Embossing metal requires some tools: stencils of artistic patterns and designs; a paper stump to press the parts inside a design so that it produces a 3D effect; a stylus to refine the edges of the designs and give them a perfect shape, and others.
Engraving
Engraving is an intaglio printmaking process in which lines are cut into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In engraving, the plate can be made of copper or zinc. The design is engraved or cut into the surface using a tool called a burin. It is a square still rod, sharpened diagonally. A graver put a series of lines of varying width and depth, so as deep lines contain more ink than the shallow ones. When pressure is applied on the cutting tool with a hammer, the process is known as carving.
Inlaying
Inlaying is the name given to an ornamental technique of inserting materials into depressions on the surface of iron, steel, or bronze to form

patterns or pictures that are normally flush with the surface. A specific type of inlay, for instance, is the technique of 'damascening' - highly developed by goldsmiths in Damascus, hence its name. First, the metal surface to be decorated is finely engraved with a sharp instrument, after which gold thread (or silver or copper) is hammered into the tiny furrows of the cut surface and securely held. Other methods of inlay are used to embed gemstones or other precious materials into a metal surface.
Enamelling
Enamelling was one of the first and most spectacular techniques used to import colour into decorative items made of metal. In simple terms, a glass-like enamel glaze (mixed with metal oxides such as cobalt or iron, to create colour) is applied to a metal surface and then subjected to intense heat. This fuses the enamel glaze to the metal, giving the latter a beautiful coloured glassy coating. There are two standard ways of applying enamel to metal. First, cloisonné, in which strips of metal are affixed to the metal surface, forming thin compartments, which are then filled with vitreous enamel; second, champlevé, in which the enamel is poured into small hollows made in the metal.
