I. Read and translate the text into Russian.

Sport

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Mused by itself, sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment are major factors. There are artifacts and structures that suggest that the Chinese engaged in sporting activities as early as 4000 B.C. Gymnastics appears to have been a popular sport in China's ancient past. Monuments to the Pharaohs indicate that a number of sports, including swimming and fishing, were well-developed and regulated several thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt. Other Egyptian sports included javelin throwing, high jump, and wrestling. Ancient Persian sports such as traditional Iranian martial art of Zoukhaneh had a close connection to the warfare skills. Among other sports that originate in Persia are polo and jousting. In Europe, ancient Irish legends show evidenceсe of the ancestor of modern hurling being used as a means of preparing warriors for battle as far back as the 13th century. A wide range of sports were already established by the time of Ancient Greece and the military culture and the development of sports in Greece influenced one another considerably. Sports became such a prominent part of their culture that the Greeks created the Olympic Games, which in ancient times were held every four years in a small village in Peloponnesus called Olympia. Sports have been increasingly organized and regulated from the time of the Ancient Olympics up to the present century. Industrialization has brought increased leisure time to the citizens of developed and developing countries, leading to more time for citizens to attend and follow spectator sports, greater participation in athletic activities, and increased accessibility. These trends continued with the advent of mass media and global communication. Professionalism became prevalent, further adding to the increase in sport's popularity, as sports fans began following the exploits of professional athletes through radio, television, and the internet-all while enjoying the exercise and competition associated with amateur participation in sports. In the new millennium, new sports have been going further from the physical aspect to the mental or psychological aspects of competing. Cyber sports organizations are becoming more and more popular.

FOOTBALL

This afternoon I'm taking my cousin and my uncle to а football match. Simon's never seen а professional game. Uncle Guy hasn't seen one for years.

Today's match is between Arsenal and Liverpool. Both of these teams are very good this season.1haven't seen Liverpool this season. They're often the best teams in the first division. I often go to the football matches. I usually go to Highbury to see Arsenal. Their games are always good. 1 sometimes go to see Chelsea. Some of their games are good, others are bad. Rugby's another exciting sport, but I don't usually go to а rugby game. The best sport is football.

ТНЕ TEAMS

Jim: Look, Simon. The teams are coming onto the field. Have you ever seen Arsenal?

Simon: No, I haven't.

Jim: What about Jane? Has she ever seen а football match?

Simon: No, she's never seen one. She doesn't like football. Have your parents ever seen а professional game?

Jim: No, they haven 't seen any professional games. Simon: Which ones are Arsenal?

Jim: They're in red and white. Simon: Who's kicking off? Jim: Liverpool.

Simon: Are both teams good this season?

Jim: Yes.

Simon: Which one's better?

Jim: Liverpool is usually better than Arsenal, but this year Arsenal is the best in the division.

Simon: Do they ever lose?

Jim: Oh yes. They sometimes lose, but they usually win. They don't often have а bad day.

Simon: Which team do you support? Jim: I've supported Arsenal.

Simon: Ме too. Dad's never liked Arsenal.

A GOAL Jim: Liverpool hasn 't scored yet... what's wrong?

Mr. Hunt: I'm not worried yet. They've only been on the field for half an hour. This is only the first half.

Jim: Look, there's Moor. He's running up the wing. He's good.

7

Mr. Hunt: No, he isn't, he's bad. He's worse than the other winger.

Jim: He's already scored one goal for Arsenal. Oh look! He's near the penalty area. And there's Blaire. He's Liverpool' s worst defender. He's tackling Moore.

Mr. Hunt: That's not Blaire, that's Blake. He's Liverpool's best player.

Jim: Collins is better than Blake. Look! Moor's in the penalty area now. Не usually scores... Yes! Look at that... а goal!

Mr. Hunt: What's the score now?

Jim: Arsenal two – Liverpool nil. What а game!

ТНЕ END OF ТНЕ GAME

Sam: Who's winning now?

Jim: Arsenal is... three-nil. They've scored another goal. Is this the last fifteen minutes?

Jim: Yes, it is.

Sam: Good. Liverpool can't score four goals in а quarter of an hour.

Mr. Hunt: Yes, they can. Look! There's а man running up the left wing. Now he's got the ball.

Sam: Yes, that's Hedge. Не plays for Liverpool. Не always scores.

Mr. Hunt: Yes, you're right. Pass it, Hedge. He's trying for а goal. Shoot! Shoot!

А goal!

Sam: No, it isn't.

Mr. Hunt: Yes, it is. What а goal!

Sam: And that 's the end of the game. Arsenal has won again – three-one.

Mr. Hunt: Yes, and Liverpool has lost. Oh well... they sometimes win ... other times they lose. That's football!

А TERRIBLE GAME

Bob: What а terrible game!

Hurry: Yes, Slade usually scores, but he hasn't scored this afternoon.

Bob: He's the team's worst player. Не hasn 't kicked the ball this match. Hurry: Не hasn't been lucky.

Good Health is above Wealth

Sport is very important in our life. It is popular among young and old people. Millions of people try to keep fit by playing different sports. A lot of people do morning exercises, jog in the morning and train themselves in fitness centers. Quite a number of people take part in different sports competitions. Many of them take up sports professionally. Our country can boast outstanding athletes wellknown all over the world. Other people like sports too but they prefer to watch sports games or to listen to sports news. Physical training is a compulsory subject at schools and universities. It goes without saying that one of the most important tasks today is to bring up a healthy generation. That's why most governments pay special attention to sport and physical training. It is necessary that all the schools should have well-equipped gyms and sports grounds. Doing sports and physical exercises can prevent young people from taking up such bad habits as alcohol and drug taking. Young people can participate in a great number of sport events. They include indoor and outdoor sports and games such as football (soccer), volleyball, basketball, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, track-and-field athletics, wrestling, chess and many others.

In many cases sport has become a commercial affair. Large sport and leisure centers have excellent facilities for sport and fitness. Though they are not free, and people have to pay, children and grownups attend them willingly. Many young people take up extreme sports and modern sporting activities, such as snowboarding, sky diving, or mountain biking. One can see a lot of teenagers rollerskating in parks or in some other special places. Such activities as hiking, backpacking, fishing and rowing are popular among all age groups in all parts of the country. Sports and physical exercises help people to be well and fit, to live a longer and happier life. There are many sports we can play by ourselves. We call these individual sports. In some individual sports, like tennis, you must compete with another person. These are called competitive sports. (Team sports are competitive sports, too.) Other individual sports can be played just for fun, without comparing yourself to anyone else. These are called noncompetitive sports. Some individual sports, like running, can be either competitive or non-competitive.

XVII. Answer the questions.

1.Why sport is popular among young and old people?

2.How do people go in for sport?
