XX. Read these two reports on health and fitness, which were published in the journal Health. Who is healthier and in good physical shape: Sue or Jose Augusto?

Sue:

I get quite a lot of exercise. The tube station is about ten minutes from my flat, so of course I do that walk twice a day, five times a week. Then I go to aerobics two or three times a week. Sometimes I miss a week or two, but I always pick it up again. I avoid taking lifts if I can – I'll walk up about four floors. Unfortunately, where I'm working at the moment I'm on the sixth floor, so I have to take the lift. I'm generally very careful about what I eat. I don't eat sugary or fatty foods if I can possibly help, because of my weight and my teeth. But I don't worry about salty food much. At home I usually grill rather than fry food. If I'm eating out I never have anything fried, always grilled. I eat fruit every day for lunch: an orange and a banana, and sometimes an apple as well. But one thing that's bad is that I drink an awful lot of coffee, always more than twelve cups a day. I think I lead quite a healthy life. I don't smoke. I have tried it but I didn't like it. Once in a blue moon I fall asleep in front of the television. I usually wake up looking forward to the day, but at the moment I don't because I don't like the girl I work with. I certainly do at the weekends!

Jose Augusto:

Ten years ago I did a lot of exercise. I went to the beach and played football for seven or eight hours. But since I started working and studying at the same time I just haven't had time for that sort of thing. I'm afraid I'm getting fat. I like walking, but in Brazil we don't really have the right climate for it, so I usually take buses or taxis. I always walk up stairs rather than take the lift. It's the only gymnastics I do! I know sugary, salty and fatty foods aren't good for me, but I never worry about what I eat. My mother does all the cooking; she usually fries things and hardly ever grills. But I eat lots of fresh fruit every day: apples, oranges, bananas. I love strawberries, but we don't often have them in Santos. Even though I'm Brazilian I don't drink much coffee – just a cup between classes. I never think of my lifestyle, but I don't think it's unhealthy. I don't smoke because I get bronchitis frequently. At the weekends I don't usually come home until 2 or 3 in the morning. Then I sometimes turn the television on, and immediately fall asleep!

Alexey Voevoda

Alexey Voyevoda has won numerous championships in his armwrestling career. He was defeated by Travis Bagent at the 2003 WAF championship, but won the Zloty Tur 2004 cup one year later, defeating high level armwrestlers such as Bagent, Brzenk, Matt Girdner, and Alexey Semerenko. Voyevoda reclaimed the WAF championship in 2004 (leftand right-handed) and won the European

62

Championship the same year. After a left hand vendetta match with Alexey Semerenko (winning 4–2) and Travis Bagent (losing 5–1) in 2005, Voyevoda took a break from his professional armwrestling career to return bobsleigh training until 2007. He returned in 2007 and defeated Michael Todd (6-0), but again left to focus on bobsledding. He returned again in 2016, losing (5-1) against Tim Bresnan. His most notable victory over John Brzenk in 2004, was immortalized in the feature-length documentary “Pulling John”.

A professional bobsleigher since 2002, Voyevoda won silver in the four-man bobsleigh event with teammates Philipp Egorov, Alexei Seliverstov, and Alexandr Zoubkov at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He also won a bronze in the two-man event at the 2008 FIBT World Championships in Altenberg, Germany. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Voyevoda won a bronze in the two-man event. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Voyevoda initially won a gold medal in the two-man event and a gold medal in the four-man event. Voyevoda received the Order For Merit to the Fatherland Award 4th class with Russian President Vladimir Putin handing the state awards.

Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova is a Russian tennis player who was one of the game’s leading contenders in the early 21st century, the winner of five Grand Slam titles. Sharapova began playing tennis as a young child, and in 1993 she caught the attention of Czech-born American tennis star Martina Navratilova. Following a suggestion by Navratilova, Sharapova and her father moved (1994) to Florida, where she quickly earned a scholarship to a tennis academy. In 2001, at the age of 14, she turned pro. At the time, women’s tennis was shifting to a power game, which suited Sharapova’s dominating style of play and her size; she eventually reached a height of 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 metres). In 2003 she competed in every Grand Slam event, with her best finish coming at Wimbledon, where she reached the fourth round. That year she won her first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) titles, at Tokyo and Quebec City. In 2004 she defeated Serena Williams in the final at Wimbledon to win her first Grand Slam. The following year Sharapova was ranked number one for the first time in her career, reaching the semifinals at

63

the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. In 2006 she won the latter event, and in 2008 she claimed her third Grand Slam, at the Australian Open.

Later that year, however, Sharapova was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, an injury that eventually required surgery. She returned to the court in mid-2009, and over the next two seasons she claimed several WTA titles, though a Grand Slam championship eluded her; Sharapova’s best result occurred in 2011, when she lost the Wimbledon finals. She returned to form in 2012, however, winning the French Open to become just the seventh female player in the Open era to complete a career Grand Slam. That year she also captured a silver medal at the London Olympic Games. After a solid start in 2013 – highlighted by an appearance in the French Open final, which she lost to Williams – a shoulder injury forced Sharapova to miss the last six months of the season. She returned to competitive play in 2014, and later that year she won the French Open, her fifth Grand Slam.

In March 2016 Sharapova revealed that she had taken meldonium (marketed as Mildronate) – a heart medication that had recently been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned substances – during the Australian Open earlier in the year. Three months later she was suspended from tennis for two years by the International Tennis Federation for her meldonium-induced failure of a drug test. (Her suspension was reduced to 15 months upon appeal.) Sharapova returned to the WTA tour in April 2017. However, she struggled to regain her form and continued to be plagued by injuries. In 2020 she announced her retirement. Her memoir, Unstoppable: My Life So Far (written with Rich Cohen), was published in 2017.
