RIGHT
Right обычно встречается как прилагательное (he made the HECDJ choice; HECDJ hand) или наречие (I want you to get me HECDJ; turn HECDJ) со значениями, соответственно, ‘правильный; правый’ и ‘правильно; направо’. Однако, в современном языке right используется также как частица, причем в двух разных функциях – эмфатической и идентифицирующей. Рассмотрим следующие примеры:
•He makes me feel right uneasy. (Pr: 110)
Пока он здесь, у меня просто сердце не на месте.
•Well, it started with me saying last night: “If I’d my time over again,” which seemed to right tickle Dr Görtler. (Pr: 127)

В двух первых примерах мы имеем дело с эмфатической функцией. С помощью частицы говорящий подчеркивает неожиданно высокую степень/интенсивность характеристики, в сущности, несоответствие норме, поскольку обычно это происходит иначе, с меньшей интенсивностью. В самом деле, если взять, в частности, второй пример, то обычно реакция на цитируемое в

нем высказывание бывает более нейтральной. В первом примере героиня подчеркивает, насколько сильным является то отрицательное психологическое воздействие, которое оказывает на нее другой персонаж. Два последних примера иллюстрируют употребление частицы, обычно при обстоятельствах времени и причины, в значении типа ‘не где-нибудь, а именно здесь’, ‘не когда-нибудь, а именно сейчас’. В идентифицирующей функции частица right приближается по употреблению к другим подобным частицам – precisely, exactly – и обычно переводится русской частицей прямо. Отдельно стоит сказать о составной частице all right. Употребление all right в качестве частицы может вводить в заблуждение, поскольку оно широко известно и употребительно в функции выражения согласия и других функциях. В случае с частицей речь идет о функции выражения уверенности; говорящий, употребляя частицу, подчеркивает, что у него нет сомнений в истинности высказывания. При переводе на русский язык довольно часто может быть использована частица уж:
•“Jimmy can take care of himself all right.” (AC1: 68)
“Уж Джимми-то может о себе позаботиться.”
•“Aye, there was a scandal, all right … ” (DL: 33)
“Да, уж там-то был настоящий скандал.”
THEN
Частица then употребляется обычно при противительном союзе but и иногда с соединительным союзом and. Возможно также слияние в один смысловой блок частицы then и again, в результате чего получаются сочетания but then again и and then again. В общем виде функцию частицы then можно определить как введение актуального аргумента с оттенком полемизирования с предыдущим высказыванием. Стоит отметить, однако, что, когда then сочетается только с but (что происходит в большинстве случаев) ее употребление имеет интересную особенность, а именно, полемизирование может идти не только с предшествующим высказыванием, но и с прагма-

тическим выводом, следующим из него. Рассмотрим следующие примеры:
•The only person who told him that he was committing a sin and a folly was Jordan, but then he was a pacifist. (NM: 57)
Единственным человеком, который сказал ему, что он совершает грех и глупость, был Джордан, но ведь он был пацифистом.
•“No, I never heard of it, but then I’ve only been here a couple of weeks … ” (DL: 255)

Как видно, во втором примере говорящий полемизирует не столько с самим первым высказыванием, сколько с тем прагматическим выводом, который может извлечь из него собеседник. В анализируемом случае этот вывод может быть таким, что искомая организация вообще не существует, раз героиня не знает о ней. Именно поэтому героиня вводит дополнительный актуальный аргумент, сигнализирующий о том, что ее знания нельзя счи- тать полными. Что касается перевода then, то из примеров видно, что на роль ее эквивалента хорошо подходит русская частица ведь, но это не единственный возможный способ перевода, в некоторых контекстах указанное прагматическое значение может быть лучше передано другими средствами. Сочетания but then again и and then again обычно вводят актуальный аргумент с оттенком противопоставления, то есть второе положение противопоставляется первому, и then (again) указывает на важность учета второго положения. Наиболее удачный русский эквивалент при этом выбирается в соответствии с контекстом, часто он не отличается от упомянутого выше ведь:
•It was possible, she admitted, that she might like him enough to marry him … but then again, ‘I might like him as a friend, and as a cousin, and as a brother, but not more … ’ (EL: 155)

WHY
Употребление why как частицы связано с выражением эмоций. Очень распространены случаи, когда эта частица выражает, в том или ином виде, эмоцию удивления, однако ее конкретное прагматическое значение уточняется в контексте. Например, это может быть удивление по поводу того, что собеседник чего-то не знает или в чем-то сомневается:
•“You know Mr. Eversleigh, don’t you?” “Know Bill? Why, of course … ” (AC1: 66)
“Вы ведь знаете м-ра Эверслей?” “Билла? Как же, конечно … ”
•‘Why, where does she fit into this?’
‘Why, I thought you must know,’ … (KA: 101)

Как видно во втором примере, где частица why встречается дважды, она может также выражать сильное удивление по поводу чего-то только что услышанного, что является новостью, и что говорящий не может для себя объяснить. Интересны также случаи, когда анализируемая частица указывает на удивление, вызванное неожиданным осознанием чеголибо или неожиданностью встречи:
•“Why, that’s not far from here!” Busby exclaimed. (DL: 32)
“А-а, так это же недалеко отсюда!” воскликнул Базби.
•“Hallo, young man” – “Why, hallo, Miss Maiden … I didn’t know you were interested in semiotics.” (DL: 196)

Особый интерес представляют те случаи, где мы имеем дело с совокупностью эмоций. Так, наряду с удивлением, частица why может также указывать на возмущение, раздражение или досаду:
•People are surprisingly ignorant about twins. Why, Angelica gave me a novel to read once, that had identical twins of different sexes. (DL: 280)

2.The only hope was that Welch wouldn’t notice what his wife would presumably tell him about the burning of the bedclothes. But Welch had been known to notice things, the attack on his pupil’s book in that essay, for example. But that had really been an attack on Welch himself; he couldn’t much care what happened to sheets and blankets which he wasn’t actually using at the time.
3.He turned the rug round so that the burn, without being actually hidden by a nearby chair, was none the less not far from it.
4.‘I’m afraid I’ll have to dash off now.’ ‘Have you got to get back?’
‘No, I’m not actually going until … No, I mean there’s … I’ve got to go upstairs.’
5.‘I’m sorry, I won’t barge in again.’
