How to Find Career Growth Opportunities
(1)Findingcareergrowthopportunitiesshouldn’tbehard.Afterall,manycompaniesareindireneedofgreattalent.Nolongercanyoustayrelevantwithoutcontinuouslylearningandupgradingyourskillet.Lackofcareergrowthopportunitiesis one of the most common detractors in an employee engagement survey.
(2)Many types of people have different perspectives on career growth. While everyone is uniquely different with their career goals and ambitions, most people belong to one of four common groups:
Group A: Those who know what they want and how to get it;
Group B: Those who know what they want but don’t know how to get it; Group C: Those who don’t know what they want;
Group D: Those who are just happy and content.
So when people say they don’t know how to find career growth opportunities, the underlying reason is that they don’t know what they want or they don’t know howtogetwhattheywantorboth.TheyaredefinitelynotinGroupAnorGroupD.
With that in mind, here are 4 steps which will help you find career growth op-
28 portunities.
(3) Step 1
The main problem with not finding career opportunities is that people don’t
3searching. Ask yourself these questions: What’s the most important thing to you? What are the main drivers in your life and career? Opportunities are everywhere and you must first believe that there is an abundance of growth opportunities noknow what they are looking for. Therefore, this step is about doing a bit of soul
matter where you are and who you work for. But without knowing what you are seeking, you won’t get far.
(4) Step 2
It’s now time to find a mentor or a coach who has got experience in the same industrythatyou’rein.Theroleofthecoachistohelpyouseedifferentopportunities,tocrystallizeyourthinkingandtosuggestactionsandactivitiesthatyou’llneed to take in order to realize your career goals. An hour or two with a good coach will save you many months and even years because they can help you transform your wishes to a concrete plan of attack.
(5) Step 3
Creativity is the key to finding opportunities. Before designing your roadmap, list down what options you currently have. A roadmap is a plan or strategy intended to achieve a particular goal. If you are looking to acquire a particular role, don’t just think about how to get that role, but also think about what other transferable skills that you could obtain that will support you in obtaining your desired role in the future. Each of your milestones should contain the followings: the opportunity that you’re seeking. For example; a new skill you’d like to obtain, an exposure to a differentpartofthebusiness,achancetopracticeadifferentskillsetyouhave.The detailsofobtainingtheopportunity.Wherewillyougetit?Whatexactlywillyoube doing? How long will you need before you consider this milestone complete? Who do you need help from? This could be your manager, your team or a colleague. (6) Step 4
What’sthepointofhavingaroadmapifnothingcomesoutofit.Inotherwords, how would you experience growth in your career if you don’t take action? The single difference between those who realize career growth opportunities and those whodon’tisthefactthatthefirstgroupofpeopletakeinitiativesandareproactive in finding opportunities and the second group of people don’t. Put a reminder in your calendar to have a reflection and review time every 3 months at least. It’s too easy to forget about your own career growth when you’re busy with the day to day of your job. Sometimes you may be lucky and what you are doing day to day is directlyalignedwithyourcareergrowthbutmoreoftenthannot,ifyouliketoobtain exceptional career growth, you have to put in the extra time and effort rather than merely completing what your current role requires. So remember to check on your milestones regularly and take action. [25]

Covid-19 is one of the biggest crises of our time. It has impacted every single one of us, shaken our social systems and disrupted every sector of our economies. The automation of work combined with the global recession led workers to lose their jobs at an accelerated pace compared to previous years, and this trend is expected to continue. The ongoing shift in the division of labour between humans, machines, and algorithms might displace 85 million jobs worldwide in the next five years, while 97 million new roles – ones that are more adapted to this new tasks distribution – may emerge. By 2025, companies expect to displace roughly 6% of their total workforce, 1 in 2 workers will need reskilling, and those remaining in their current roles will need update 40% of their skill set to adapt to the changing labour market. There is a way to collectively benefit from these challenging times. Decades of research have shown that the most valuable asset of any economy or company is its human capital. Around the globe, companies are already experiencing a shortage in relevant skills for future roles and are investing in reskilling and upskilling their workforce. By 2025, organizations say they will train over 70% of theiremployeestoensuretheycansmoothlytransitionintothejobsoftomorrow… These include: DevOps Engineers, Artificial Intelligence Specialists, Digital Marketing Managers, Talent Acquisition Specialists and Customer Success Specialists. It will take on average between 2 weeks and 5 months for workers to pick up new skills allowing them to move into these new roles. But data shows they won’t need to have the perfect skill set to start transitioning. While two third of employers expect to get a return on investment in employees reskilling programs within just one year, governments will also need to step in to update and fund education and training systems, and to ensure displaced workers have adequate safety nets. With purposefulleadershipandcollaboration,wecanturnthisglobalcrisisintoaunique opportunity to transition into a future of jobs that inclusive, fair and sustainable.
