Glossary
A CV- in English, a curriculum vitae, Latin for “course of life”, often shortened to CV, is a short written summary of a person’s career, qualifications, and education. This use of the term for such a short summary is the most common usage
in both North American and British English. In North America but not elsewhere, the term résumé is a common synonym for CV in this sense of short career sum-
mary. [10]
A résumé, sometimes spelled resume, called a CV in English outside North America, isadocument createdandusedby a personto presenttheirbackground, skills, and accomplishments. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment. A typical résumé contains a “summary” of relevant job experience and education. The résumé is usually one of the first items, along with a cover letter and sometimes an application for employment, whichapotentialemployerseesregardingthejobseekerandistypically

Hiring managers vs. Recruiters
Hiring managers have several duties throughout every recruiting stage, and those duties can only be tackled by hiring managers. Even if the recruiter has provided a shortlist of very promising candidates, it’s still up to hiring managers to dig into candidates’ abilities and identify who fits the bill. Only the hiring manager is able to:
•Evaluate candidates, uncover their potential and reject those who look good on paper but may lack the necessary job-related skills.
•Inform recruiters that they need to continue looking at new candidates because no suitable candidate has been identified yet (instead of settling for a substandard option).
•Impact the winning candidate’s decision to accept the job offer.
•While the hiring manager takes responsibility for the outcome, this by no means implies that the recruiter’s role is minor or simple. Recruiters lay the foun-

dation for hiring the right people. That’s because they use their expertise to: |

It includes a meeting, a few questions, ahandshake, andajobofferfortherightcandidate.Knowingwhattodo and what not to do can be the difference between receiving a job offer and losing an opportunity. 2. _________________________
Do: Prepare for the interview no later than the night before. Make a checklist of what you’ll need to take with you, and make sure you have directions to the interview site. Choose your interview outfit in advance and make sure it is clean and
ironed, if necessary. Outline your answers to common interview questions. Don’t: Wait until the morning of an interview to gather your materials.

You are sitting at your computer, about to apply for your dream job, but then thoughts start to go through your head that this is a waster of your time.
Maybeyouarethinking,“Myparentsdidn’tgotocollege,”or“Ihavealearning disability.” “When I went on their website and I looked at the folks in the most seniorlevelroles,Ididn’tseeanyonewhorepresentedmyraceormygender.”“There’s just no way I’m going to get this job.” So you don’t even submit the application.
But I’m here to tell you that your self-doubt about your experiences can be the key to driving your career success.
Mostofusexperienceself-doubtathighstakesmoments,especiallyiftheyare people of color, first generation college student, or they do not have a traditional background, so they do not fit “the mold.” If that is you, you are a part of my community.
What I have realized is that these experiences that seem like a liability are actually your differentiating strength. The secret is to transform how you perceive your own story. Even if you have been on an untraditional path, you have accrued some skills over time that are really valuable in the workforce. Your task is to identify those experiences and trumpet them, because it is likely that story, that is your ticket to a great job.
Iknowthis,becauseIhadmyownself-doubtsthatIhadtoovercome.Ididnot have top-notch internships in college. I also was not an extraordinary student. By the time graduation came around, I was definitely the thank you, laude, versus the cum laude. What I didn’t realize was that I was really good at connecting with people, andnowasatalentnerdandaCEO,I’vewatchedthousandsofgraduates, who actually had a lot of self-doubts, overcome those and accomplish goals they never
thought were imaginable, and here’s how.

Ask yourself two questions. The first is, why do you want to do this work? Maybeyoualreadyknowthekindofjoborworkenvironmentthatmakesyouhappy,or
2can help give you clues. For example, did your grandmother do manual labor, and it made you really worry that she did not get access to high quality healthcare? Did your brother have to overcome his dyslexia, and you helped him with his reading? And so, you became really attuned to education policy. When you are in an interview, go ahead and talk about them, because it will show your passion and your dedication to the work.

He is now in his third year at Georgetown Law.
The second question you have to ask yourself is, how can I share my story to showcase the unique strengths I will bring to the work? For example, did you have to work multiple jobs while you were in college that did not at all align with your major?Thatshowsanemployerthatyouhavetimemanagementskillsandastrong work ethic. Did you need to drop out of college because one of your parents was sick? Fill in the gap, talk about how you administered their treatment plan. Talk about how you had to work around their complex schedules. That shows that you arethoughtful, thatyouarecompassionate, andyouknowwhat, thatiswhatmakes a great teammate.

that story, tell it with conviction. I am sure that the hiring manager is going to hear the strength in it too.maybe you have not quite figured that out yet. Usually, your personal experiences
