PREFACE

When people ask themselves “Who am I?” they describe themselves in different ways. For instance: they may give their name – Ivan, Igor, or Maria; define themselves by their function or role - I am a student, scientist, doctor, or manager; describe their qualities, such as “I am cheery, kind, or enterprising”; or list the activities they enjoy – “I like sports or collect postcards.” When traveling abroad, people often identify themselves by nationality or place of citizenship – “I am Russian, Chinese, German, or American.”

Physical and cultural traits are also very important to our identity. Every human being has one or another color of eyes, hair, or skin, and is of different height, weight, and body type. Some features – physical and behavioral, are unique and useful to describe individual persons. Every person is distinctive and unique; however, there are some characteristics, such as habits, customs, and behavior patterns that are common for most people of a particular country. Commonalities in Finland will be different in Poland, the USA, China, Japan, or Russia.

So, you arrive in a foreign country whose traditions and customs you are going to explore. You ask yourself a few questions. How I understand the people of this country and their culture? How do I best communicate with them? How can I live comfortably among them? How do I enjoy my studies or vacation while visiting this foreign country and its unique society?

Bearing this uniqueness in mind, it is important to embrace tolerance when abroad, to view each experience as a learning experience. Build relationships on similarities while celebrating differences. Understanding breaks down prejudice and dispels fear. On November 16, 1995, UNESCO, at its General Conference, adopted Resolution 5.61-Declaration of Principles on Tolerance.

Tolerance is social interaction based on respect and acceptance of differences in other people. Tolerance encompasses human right to be different and equal. The practice of tolerance means the ability to live in peace with people dissimilar to you, to accept different political views and religious backgrounds, to appreciate the diver-

sity of our world’s cultures and of our forms of expression and different ways of being human.

Oh, to understand her! Russia is an enormous country with its distinctive history and culture. Russians are the nation with vivid peculiarities, habits, and customs. In 1860 Russian poet Fedor Tyutchev wrote:

You will not grasp her (Russia) with your mind

Or cover [her] with a common label,

For Russia is one of a kind –

Believe in her, if you are able...

(translated by Anatoly Liberman)

In reality, no mysterious Russia exists. Like any other country, Russia takes its own place on the map of the modern world, and its historical destiny is inseparable from the destiny of mankind.

It may be not easy to live in Russia, but we think that life in Russia is interest-

ing.

Whether you are at the airport or in the hotel; on the subway or out in the street; at the store, or in a restaurant; in the hospital or at the theater ticket office; you will become acquainted with Russian people. They may work as customs officials or be passengers in public transportation; or they may be students, teachers, or doctors. You will also meet with waiters and salespeople, with police officers, and with pedestrians in the street. Your contacts may be business-related (official) or personal; they may be expected or surprising; pleasant or unpleasant. You will no doubt encounter the rules governing business relations and other contacts in Russia. Examples include the relationships between tourists entering the country and customs officials, and between citizens, residents, and visitors as well as between different state institutions and officials. They may include interactions between students and a university dean or the head of a university department, or a dormitory worker; or among students and teachers during a course. Furthermore, relationships between them may or may not change after the course ends. They may become more equal and friendly, or they may stay official.
