Они плыли на лодках и решили, что тот, кто первым коснется ирландского берега, тот и будет правителем этой страны. Лодки не отставали друг от друга и приближались к намеченной цели одновременно. Кто же будет править Ирландией? Самый быстрый. В самый ответственный момент один из предводителей взял топорик, отрубил себе руку и бросил ее на ирландскую землю. Ну и что, что без руки, зато - правитель. На старых полотнах можно иногда встретить изображение отрубленной руки на фоне красного плаща, символизирующие Ирландию.
