Ex. 21. Read the texts and say, how the event (problem) can influence our relationships (cooperation).

Text 1

Under a convention between Tsarist Russia and the United States (1867), not only the mainland part of Alaska but also the islands in its littoral (прибрежная, приморская) zone passed to the US. So as not to describe each of the many islands in the treaty, it was decided to use a dividing line: All territories to the east of it, including the islands, went to the US, while all territories to the west remained under Russian control. This practice is quite common in international law and was used, in particular, in the Spanish – US treaty on the session of the Philippines as well as in the Spitsbergen Treaty.

In the late 1980s, different non-governmental schools began to emerge on the horizon. The project of the first Korean school in Russia was supported by Moscow Education Department. The founders’ purpose was to revive the Korean language, culture and traditions. Now this school is the largest international school in Russia. It has more than 600 pupils representing 50 nationalities – 40% of pupils are ethnic Koreans, 40% are Russians, 20% other, including Americans, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Czech. Soon, other Korean schools may appear in St. Petersburg and Ussuriysk.

The problem of the South Kurils between Japan and Russia is still in giving troubles to our government. Though it is an obstacle to the development of all-round cooperation, it is taking place, but is considerably weaker than what is possible. The

Japanese are mainly interested in the Sakhalin shelf’s petroleum, rich fishing grounds near the coasts of the islands, and they are going to invest in the deserted eastern regions, which surpass (превосходят) the South Kurils thousands of times in area, size of population and natural resources. The key point is whether the islands belong to us by right, and if they do, we must not give them to anyone, not for the world.

8.Are you a good communicator? Should a good manager obtain such factors as: a sense of humor; an awareness of international business ethics; being a good listener; physical appearance; fluency in the language; being good at influencing people?

9.Is it important to mind your behaviors during communication with your partners (relatives, friends, staffers, patrons)?

10.What skills do you need to become a good communicator?
