8  The Digestive System Organ Scanning

2.2.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be on fast for 8–12 hours. Subcostal scanning should be performed with the patient in a left lateral decubitus or supine, deep inspiration so that the liver moves down as an acoustic window.

2.2.2\ Section Structure

Major area: the gallbladder. Ancillary areas—the portal vein liver hepatic artery, pancreas, superior mesenteric vein, gallbladder long axial section, and right liver lobe oblique section.

2.2.3\ Measuring Method and Normal

Gallbladder size: transverse diameter <3.5 cm. The thickness of gallbladder wall is <0.3 cm.

Measuring distance should be from the outer edge to the inner edge or from the inner edge to the outer edge or from the middle wall to the middle wall.

2.2.4\ Clinical Application Value

This section is the standard section of the gallbladder and is used to measure the size and wall thickness of the gallbladder, observing cholecystitis, gallstones, space-occupying lesions, and other abnormal echo in cavity.

2.2.5\ Notice

The short axis scanning of the gallbladder can for better visualizing the interface of the gallbladder.

2.3.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be on fast for 8–12 hours with a left lateral decubitus or supine position. Subcostal scanning should be performed. The patient can keep deep inspiration so that the liver moves down as an acoustic window.

2.3.2\ Section Structure

Major area: transverse section of the gallbladder neck.

Ancillary areas: transverse section of the portal vein, common bile duct, and proper hepatic artery, which have been referred to as the Mouse

Sign by Bartrum and Crow. Transverse section of the pancreas neck, right anterior lobe of the liver, and left internal lobe of the liver.

2.3.3\ Clinical Application Value

This plane can be used to observed gallbladder neck diseases which may not be found by the standard longitudinal scanning and can be used to understand the position relationship of the portal vein, common bile duct, and proper hepatic artery.
