Fig. 6.18  Parasternal descending aorta. (a) Long-axis view. (b) Short-axis view

2.14.1\ Scanning Method

The patient lies supine or on the left lateral position. The transducer is placed at the site 1–2 cm to near the left sternal edge (second to third intercostal space). On the base of left ventricular long- axis view, descending aorta long-axis view can be obtained by titling the beam to xiphoid process, while descending aorta short-axis view can be taken by rotating the probe inferiorly.

ular inferior wall, left atrium, mitral valve, and descending aorta are the main structures to be shown anterior-posteriorly.

2.14.3\ Measuring Method and Normal Value

The anterior–posterior diameter of descending aorta is 24 ± 7 mm.

2.14.4\ The Clinical Application

2.14.2\ Scanning Section Structure

Focuses are put on the size of descending aorta or

Right ventricular anterior wall, right ventricular

thoracic aorta and the acoustic transmity in the

outflow tract, partial right ventricle interventricu-

aorta. Whether the coronary sinus is dilated or

lar septum, aortic root, left ventricle, left ventric-

not can also be known in this view.
