1\ Longitudinal Scanning

of the Parotid Gland

1.1\ Scanning Method

Continuous longitudinal and transverse scanning of the parotid gland region is performed with patient supine (posterior part of the face, inferior to the

zygomatic arch, anterior and inferior to the external auditory meatus, anterior to the mastoid process, superficial to the masseter muscle, posterior to the ramus and angle of mandible); jugular lymph nodes should also be examined at the same time.

3  Salivary Gland Scanning (Parotid Gland and Submandibular Gland)

1.2\ Section Structure

Anterior border of the parotid gland is clear, echogenicity of the parotid parenchyma is homogenous with the echogenic dense higher than the adjacent soft tissue. Posterior and lateral borders are usually unclear because of the attenuation of the parotid parenchyma. The longitudinal section of the parotid gland is of pyramid shape. Superficial and profound lobe cannot be differentiated from the image. The normal parotid duct cannot be shown in the image.

1.3\ Measurement Method

and Normal Value

Longitudinal length of the gland is about 5 cm; anterior-posterior length cannot be measured because of the blurred margin.

1.4\ Clinical Application Value

Evaluate the echo homogeneity of the parotid parenchyma to exclude diffused diseases such as Sjogren syndrome and other acute or chronic inflammation. A continuous scan will exclude the focal lesions of the parotid gland.

1.5\ Notice

Profound group of the parotid lymph nodes is located in the parotid parenchyma and should not be misdiagnosed as focal lesion of the parotid gland.

2.1\ Scanning Method

Continuous longitudinal and transverse scan of the parotid gland region is performed with patient supine (posterior part of the face, inferior to the zygomatic arch, anterior and inferior to the external auditory meatus, anterior to the mastoid process, superficial to the masseter muscle, posterior to the ramus and angle of mandible); jugular lymph nodes should also be examined at the same time. Minimal pressure should be used to avoid influence of the blood signal.

2.2\ Section Structure

None or a few spots of blood flow Doppler signal will appear in normal parotid gland parenchyma. External carotid artery may be shown running in the deep gland occasionally.

2.3\ Clinical Application Value

Increase of blood signals in all kinds of inflammation
