3.1.1\ Scanning Method

The subject takes a supine position and stretches out the head the slightly to make a full extension of the neck. The head holds the middle position or turns to the opposite side when one side of the internal jugular vein is examined. The probe is put on the lateral or post-lateral neck, and longitudinal scanning as well as cross scanning from bottom to top is performed.

3.1.2\ Sectional Structure

Transverse scanning at the level of the thyroid isthmus from the lateral thyroid can display the internal jugular vein, which is located at lateral to the common carotid artery. The jugular vein lumen structure can disappear when pressed by

the probe. The venous valves of the proximal internal jugular vein can be seen by longitudinal scanning. The diameter of the internal carotid vein will increase when patients have a deep inspiration and breath-hold.

3.1.3\ Measurement Methods

Measuring the diameter of the internal jugular vein in cross section. Normal value is about 1.1 cm. There may be differences in bilateral IJV in different cases.

3.1.4\ Clinical Significance

This plane can be used to diagnose dilation, thrombosis of the internal jugular vein, carotid arteriovenous fistula, and others.
