Fig. 6.34  Suprasternal aortic arch short-axis view

2.30.1\ Scanning Methods

The patient is lying flat (supine) with the neck hyperextended. The probe is placed in the suprasternal notch with the beam directed towards the heart and the scan section being in a semisagittal plane parallel to the aortic arch long axis, by titling right slightly.

2.30.2\ Section Structure

Structures imaged are the aorta with its three branches, right pulmonary artery, and left atrium. As the right brachiocephalic trunk artery is usually not in a same plane with left common carotid artery and left subclavian artery, color Doppler can be used to show the three vessels at the same time.

2.30.3\ Measuring Method and Normal Value

Normal diameter of aortic arch measured near the right side of left common carotid artery is 20–33 mm. Diameter of descending aorta measured about 10 mm beneath the left subclavian artery is 15–30 mm. The normal anterior–poste- rior diameter of right pulmonary artery is 14–17 mm.

2.30.4\ The Clinical Application Value

This view is used in the multiple plane scanning for suggesting aortic valve stenosis, supravalvular aortic stenosis, aortic aneurysm, aortic coarctation, and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
