2.29.1\ Scanning Methods

The patient is lying flat (supine) with the neck hyperextended. The probe is placed in the suprasternal notch and the transducer tilted 45° laterally from the aortic arch long-axis view, being directed towards the left shoulder.

2.29.2\ Section Structure

Transverse cross sections of aortic arch and superior vena cava are visualized in this view.

2.29.3\ Measuring Method and Normal Value

The right-to-left diameter of superior vena cava measured at the midlevel is 13 ± 5 mm normally.

2.29.4\ The Clinical Application Value

Whether the superior vena cava is compressed or dilated or not can be seen in this view.
