4.25.1\ Scanning Method

(1) Sagittal sections of the kidneys are acquired by swinging the probe to the left and right sides of the spine on the basis of sagittal section of the spine; (2) transverse sections of the kidneys are acquired by rotating the probe at 90° on the basis of renal sagittal sections; (3) coronary sections of the kidneys can be acquired by rotating the probe again to show the abdominal anteroposterior

view on the basis of sagittal section and transverse section.

4.25.2\ Section Structures

(1) In sagittal section images, the kidneys are shown as long ellipse in shape, while adrenal glands could be seen sitting on the kidneys, and stomach bubble is seen in the front over the left adrenal gland (Fig. 13.37). (2) In transverse section images, the kidneys are shown as ellipse in

shape, located on the both sides of lumbar vertebra (Fig. 13.38). (3) In coronary section image,

the kidneys are shown as long ellipse in shape, located on the both sides of lumbar vertebrae, and the bilateral renal arteries could be shown stemmed from the abdominal aorta (Fig. 13.39).

4.25.3\ Measuring Method

The suprainferior and anteroposterior diameters in the sagittal section are measured, but the trans-

verse diameter of the kidney and width (anteroposterior diameter) of the renal pelvis are measured in the transverse section.

4.25.4\ Clinical Significance

To investigate development of the kidneys and to diagnose malformations like renal anomalies and urinary tract obstruction diseases.
