4.20.1\ Scanning Method

The probe is moved on the mother’s abdominal wall, along with fetal long axis and from head side to foot side, to show the fetal visceral organs. And then the probe is rotated at 90° to acquire transverse section of fetal abdomen, which is perpendicular to the spine, to show the stomach bubble and the intrahepatic segm ent of the umbilical vein.

4.20.2\ Section Structures

The abdominal wall and the triangular structure of the vertebral transverse section, stomach bubble, and the intrahepatic segment of umbilical vein as well as adrenal gland are shown in the meantime. On the standard image, the umbilical vein should be shown as an intrahepatic segment turning to the right side, neither kidneys nor thoracic organs should be shown.

4.20.3\ Measuring Method

Circumference is measured with the calipers placed along the outer edge of the fetal abdomen.

4.20.4\ Clinical Significance

Abdomen circumference, a major index of fetal ultrasound, reflects fetal growth and development and is also one of the major parameters for estimating fetal body weight and for diagnosing fetal intrauterine growth retardation.

4.20.5\ Normal Reference Values

Normal values of abdomen circumference change with the growth of gestational age.

4.22.1\ Scanning Method

The probe is moved to the lower abdomen part to acquire transverse section through the insertion of the umbilical cord.

4.22.2\ Section Structures

Only umbilical vessels are shown coming in and going out of the umbilicus, without splanchnocele. Each umbilical artery is seen at one side of

the bladder winding from its back to the frontal umbilicus of the abdominal wall.

4.22.3\ Clinical Significance

It is helpful to investigate the integrity of abdominal wall and to diagnose abnormalities such as omphalocele, umbilical hernia, abdominal wall defects, and visceral bareness.

4.23\ Sagittal Scanning of the Fetal

Kidneys

Fig. 13.36  Transverse section of the fetal low abdomen at level of the bladder, part of abdominal wall, and insertion of umbilicus are shown. Each of the two umbilical arteries is shown at one side of the bladder in color power Doppler ultrasound. UC umbilical cord, UA umbilical artery, BL bladder, S spine
