4.13.1\ Scanning Method

On the basis of four-chamber view of fetal heart, the probe is rotated to the upper right or right shoulder to acquire long axis view of left fetal heart.

4.13.2\ Section Structures

The main structures shown in the image are the left ventricle outflow tract, ascending aorta, ventricular septum, and right ventricle on the right side of ventricular septum (Fig. 13.27).

4.13.3\ Measuring Method

Inner diameter of the aorta is measured at end- diastolic phase of the ventricle, when the aortic valve is closed.

4.13.4\ Clinical Significance

The structure of left ventricle outflow tract and the continuity of the whole linear echo from the ventricular septum to the wall of ascending aorta can be investigated, which is helpful in detecting membranous or perimembranous ventricular defects near the outflow tract and also helpful in diagnosing tetralogy of Fallot and other anomalies of the major vessels.

4.13.5\ Normal Reference Values

Normal values of the aorta change with the growth of gestational weeks.

4.15.1\ Scanning Method

On the basis of four-chamber view of fetal heart, the probe is rotated toward upper left or left shoulder to acquire three vessels section of fetal heart.

4.15.2\ Section Structures

Shown in the image are the main pulmonary artery (including right ventricle outflow tract), aortic arch, and superior vena cava.

4.15.3\ Measuring Method

Inner diameter of pulmonary artery is measured at diastolic phase of the ventricle, when pulmonary valve is closed.

4.15.4\ Clinical Significance

Both the blood flow of the main pulmonary artery and that of aortic arch all flow into descending aorta, being shown in the same color which represents the same flow direction. The aorta is slightly smaller than the pulmonary artery in diameter. This section is helpful in diagnosing sophisticated heart malformations.

4.15.5\ Normal Reference Values

Normal values of the pulmonary artery change with the growth of gestational weeks.
