5  The Breast Scanning

8\ Doppler Spectrum of Normal

Breast in Lactating Women

Fig. 5.8  Doppler spectrum of normal breast in lactating women

8.1\ Scanning Method

8.3\ Clinical Application Value

Based on two-dimensional and color Doppler scanning, start pulsed Doppler. According to the diameter of the blood vessel, flexibly adjust the sampling volume. Try to make the included angle between the sound beam and the blood flow signal to be less than 60°.

During lactation, not only the blood vessels were increased, and the blood flow velocity increased, but also the resistance index decreased.

8.2\ Section Structures

Mammary gland structure at upper of figure, Doppler spectrum at below.

9\ Scanning of the Cooper’s

Ligament in Normal Breast

Fig. 5.9  Sonographic appearance of the Cooper’s ligament in normal breast. Notes: 0 skin, 1 subcutaneous fat, 2 mammary gland, 3 fat behind gland, 4 ectopectoralis. The thin arrow refers to Cooper’s ligament. The thick arrow refers to the rib

9.1\ Scanning Method

9.2\ Section Structures

Patient lies on the back. Patients could lie on the contralateral side when examining the outer quadrant. Continuously take longitudinal and transverse scanning or radial scanning along the nipple. The breast duct can be better displayed by the radial scanning.

From the superficial to the deep, respectively, as the skin, subcutaneous fat, mammary gland, fat behind gland, and ectopectoralis. The thin arrow refers to Cooper’s ligament.

9.3\ Clinical Application Value

Cooper’s ligament plays an important role in the fixation and support of mammary gland. Because Cooper’s ligaments are fixed at both ends, there

is no stretch, when being invaded by cancer, not with the rapid expansion of the cancer, so when suffering from cancer, breast skin surface can form many pittings and presents a special “orange peel like” skin.

10\ Ultrasonographic Features

of the Normal Breast

in Elderly Women

Fig. 5.10

Ultrasonographic features of normal breast in elderly women. Notes: 0 skin, 1 subcutaneous fat, 2 mammary gland, 3 fat behind gland, 4 ectopectoralis. The triangle refers to fat in the glandular layer; the thin arrow refers to linear hyperecho in fat; the thick arrow refers to the rib
