1.4.1\ Scanning Method

The subject should be on fast for 8–12 h with a supine position. Probe is placed on the right subcostal transversely, scanning from above to below. Patient can be in full inspiration to make the left liver lobe down as an acoustic window.

1.4.2\ Section Structure

Transverse section of the inferior vena cava, right posterior hepatic lobe, top of the right kidney, psoas major, and right rib phrenic angle.

1.4.3\ The Clinical Application Value

The abnormal echogenicities around the inferior vena cava, right kidney, and psoas major may come from the retroperitoneal space. The local abnormality between the right posterior lobe of the liver and the right kidney can be found. The liver and kidney fossae are the lowest area of the retroperitoneal space when the patient is in supine position.

1.5.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be on fast for 8–12 hours and take a supine position. Probe is placed vertically in middle line of the subxiphoid.

1.5.2\ Section Structure

Longitudinal section of the abdominal aorta, the celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery, and the left hepatic lobe and oblique scan of the esophagus.

1.5.3\ Measuring Method and Normal

Measuring anteroposterior diameter of the left hepatic lobe from the top of the anterior capsule to the top of the posterior capsule. Anteroposterior diameter should be no more than 7 cm in the normal liver.

1.5.4\ The Clinical Application Value

The abdominal aorta, the celiac artery, superior mesenteric artery, the left hepatic lobe and the esophagus are located in the retroperitoneal space. The abnormal structures around those vessels are judged to be the lesions of the retroperitoneal space. Horizontal part of the duodenum is located at posterior-anterior of the head of the pancreas, its distal segment is between the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery. If the angle of the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery decreases, the duodenum will be oppres to be narrow and obstructed, and its proximal segment will be dilated, which is known as superior mesenteric artery compression syndrome. The enlargement of the lymph nodes or other space-occupying lesions can increase the angle between the abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric artery.

1.6.1\ Scanning Method

Patient should be on fast for 8–12 h with a supine position. The probe is transversely put on subxiphoid after showing transverse plane of the pancreas, moving probe downward to the level near the umbilicus.

1.6.2\ Section Structure

1.6.3\ Clinical Application Value

Those structures are all located in the retroperitoneal space; the abnormal echogenicity around them is judged to be retroperitoneal diseases.

Transverse section of the abdominal aorta, superior mesenteric artery, superior mesenteric vein, and inferior vena cava.
