Abstract

The mammary gland consists of skin, subcutaneous tissue, glands, and glands in the skin from the superficial to the deep. The glandular layer is divided by Cooper’s ligament into 15–20 mammary gland lobes in a radial pattern with the nipple as the center. In the role of hormones, the mammary glands have different sonogram in childbearing age, pregnancy, lactation, and elderly women. The main methods of breast scanning are (1) a radial scan from the outside to the inside with the nipple as the center and

(2) from the outside to the inside longitudinal scanning, from top to down transverse scan. The two scanning methods can be combined.

1.1\ Scanning Method

Patients lie on the back. Patients could lie on the contralateral side when examining the outer quadrant. Continuous longitudinal, transverse, or radial scan along the nipple could be used. Radial scan can show the breast ducts better.

From shallow to deep the structures are strata, the skin, subcutaneous fat, gland, pectoralis major muscle, and rib (arrow), respectively. The echo of normal mammary gland is heterogeneous, which has hypoechoes in the hyperechoes. The hyper-

echoes are lobules and connective tissues, while the hypoechoes are ducts.

1.3\ Measurement Method

The thickness of the breast is generally measured between the superficial fascia and the deep fascia of the outer upper quadrant of the breast. The gland thickness is different in different physio-

logical stages (puberty, sexual maturity, gestation, lactation, and old-age atrophy). The individual differences are also large. There is no fixed numerical range. Normal duct width: less than 2 mm.

1.4\ Clinical Application Value

The structure of the gland and whether there is tumor in the breast should be observed.

2.1\ Scanning Method

2.2\ Section Structures

Using color Doppler on the basis of grayscale ultrasound, the color gain is adjusted to maximum sensitivity without noises; meanwhile the sampling frame should not be too big.

From shallow to deep strata, the skin, subcutaneous fat, gland, pectoralis major muscle, and rib are shown, respectively. The blue strip in the sampling frame is the blood flow.
