2.2.1\ Scanning Method

The patient lies in supine position with his bladder moderately filled. Transverse scannings of the bladder are obtained from the suprapubic symphysis at the lower abdomen.

2.2.2\ Measuring Method and Normal

The thickness of the bladder wall and the width of bladder can be measured.

2.2.3\ Section Structure

This is the transverse view of the bladder. The bladder wall is made of four layers (coats): tunica mucosa, tela submucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa. The tunica mucosa consists of mucous and muscularis mucosae. On amplified sonograms, echodensity of the bladder wall is composed of five linear layers with different echogenicity, which are shown hyperechoic alternating with hypoechoic in line. The first layer is hyperechoic due to the reflection

coming from an interface between the mucous and fluid in the bladder. The second layer with hypoechogenicity is the muscularis mucosae. The third layer consisting of tela submucosa is hyperechoic. The fourth layer with hypoechogenicity is the tunica muscularis. The fifth layer with hyperechogenicity represents the tunica serosa.

2.2.4\ The Clinical Application Value

This view is used to diagnose the space-occupying lesion of the bladder wall and lesion within the bladder and to measure the bladder volume and residual urine. The form of the openings of ureters and cleanness of the bladder can also be observed.

2.2.5\ Notice

Differentiation between the artifacts and the lesions within the bladder should be noticed. The second section: prostate.
