Fig.9.25  (a) Longitudinal section of the common iliac artery. (b) Color Doppler flow image of the common iliac artery

6.1.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be fasted for 8–12 h, and should be in a supine position. A 3.5 MHz or 5.0 MHz probe is utilized and is placed obliquely on the left or right lower abdomen. Color Doppler can help to find the vessels.

6.1.2\ Section Structure

Longitudinal view of the common iliac artery, common iliac vein, external iliac artery, and internal iliac vein.

6.1.3\ Measurement Method and Normal Value

The internal diameter and thickness of the internal membrane of the common iliac artery, external iliac artery, and internal iliac artery are measured.

6.1.4\ Clinical Application Value

On this section, the iliac arteries are evaluated to exclude a stenosis or dilation of the lumen. An aneurysm can be diagnosed if a lumen dilation above 50% is observed. In arteriosclerosis, asymmetrical thickening and echo change of the inner middle layer are commonly observed.
