Fig. 9.17  Transverse section of the bilateral main renal artery

5.1.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be fasted for more than 8 h, and should be in a supine position. The probe is placed vertically on the midsagittal line; after

showing the long-axis view of the opening of the SMA, rotate the probe transversely and move it caudally for 1–2 cm to search the opening of the bilateral renal artery at the lateral part of the Ao. The renal artery lies posterior to the renal vein, and the longitudinal view of the left renal vein can be used as a mark to find the renal artery. Certain pressure should be exerted; cross-detection (detecting the renal artery from the opposite side of the Ao) may be helpful to reduce the echo–flow angle.

5.1.2\ Section Structure

Transverse section of the Ao, longitudinal section of the bilateral renal artery, transverse section of the SMA.

5.1.3\ Measurement Method and Normal Value

The diameter of the renal artery is 4–7 mm, with laminar flow in the artery lumen. If the echo–flow angle can be adjusted to lower than 60°, a Doppler spectrum can be acquired on this section.

5.1.4\ Clinical Application Value

Color aliasing and an increased PSV can be shown if there is a significant renal artery stenosis; the opening of the artery is the most common position of a stenosis related to arteriosclerosis.

5.1.5\ Notice

On this section, because of the large echo–flow angle, the opening of the artery may be badly filled bad on color Doppler flow imaging and a false positive increased blood PSV may be detected.
