4\ Color Doppler Flow Image

of the Thyroid

Fig. 4.4  Color Doppler flow image of the thyroid

4.1\ Scanning Method

The patient is placed in a supine position with the neck slightly extended. The probe is located on the neck below the thyroid cartilage, to assess the vascularity on color Doppler. The patient should be instructed to refrain from swallowing and maintain shallow breathing during the scan, even hold the breath when necessary. In order to avoid the loss of the color Doppler signal, the probe should be stable, touch the skin slightly, and not squeeze the thyroid gland. When the internal blood flow signal is evaluated, the wall filter and color scale should be adjusted to a relative low range.

4.2\ Section Structure

Color Doppler flow imaging shows scattered point-strip blood flow signal in the thyroid parenchyma.

4.3\ The Clinical Application Value

This section is used to assess the blood distribution and to diagnose the diffuse toxic goiter, hyperthyroidism, and increased blood flow signal due to various thyroiditis.

5.3\ Measuring Method

and Normal Value

The diameter of the superior thyroid artery is measured at the point of origin from the external carotid artery. The mean diameter is about 2 mm, and the peak systolic velocity ranges from 30 to 50 cm/s.

5.4\ The Clinical Application Value

This section is used to diagnose the diffuse toxic goiter and to monitor the treatment effect of hyperthyroidism.

of the Inferior Thyroid Artery

6.1\ Scanning Method

The patient is placed in supine position with the neck slightly extended. There are two ways to display the inferior thyroid artery. Firstly, the common carotid artery is displayed in the transverse scan; the inferior thyroid artery runs transversely at the dorsal side of the carotid. Then the proximal and distal segment of the inferior thyroid artery should be observed. The

proximal segment runs inferolateral to connect with the thyrocervical trunk. The distal part moves medial inferiorly and divides into the upper and the lower branches at the dorsal side of the thyroid. Secondly, the thyrocervical trunk is displayed at the root of the neck, from which the inferior thyroid artery runs cranially and then turns medially to go into the thyroid gland through the dorsal side of the common carotid.
