5.11.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be on fast for 8–12 h, with a supine position, and should drink 800–1000 mL of water to fill duodenum quickly. The scanning will be operated at the right upper abdomen.

5.11.2\ Section Structure

Major area: transverse scanning of the droop part of duodenum. Ancillary areas—transverse section of the abdominal aorta, superior mesenteric artery, superior mesenteric vein, and inferior vena cava.

5.11.3\ Measuring Method and Normal

Measuring duodenum wall thickness. The normal wall is approximately 3–5 mm, and greater than 6 mm is thought to be abnormal.

5.11.4\ Clinical Application Value

Horizontal part of the duodenum. Locate at the posterior-interior of the head of the pancreas; its distal segment is between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. If the angle of the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery decreases, the duodenum may be oppressed to be narrow, and its proximal segment will be obstructed and dilated which is known as superior mesenteric artery syndrome. If the larger tumor of the duodenum appears, it can be visualized.

Measuring duodenum wall thickness. Thickness of the normal duodenum is approxi-

mately 3–5 mm, and greater than 6 mm is thought to be abnormal.

5.12.3\ Clinical Application Value

Horizontal part of the duodenum located at the posterior-interior of the head of the pancreas, its distal segment is between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. If the angle between the abdominal aorta and the superior mesenteric artery decreases, the duodenum will be oppressed to be narrow so that the duodenum narrow may be formed; its proximal segment will be obstructed and dilated which is known as superior mesenteric artery syndrome.
