5.1.1\ Scanning Method

The patient should be on fast for 8–12 hour with a supine position. The probe is put vertically to subxiphoid and inclined slightly to the left posterior. It is usually necessary to has the patient drink water 800–1000 mL to fill the stomach.

5.1.2\ Section Structure

Major area: longitudinal section of the lower segment of the esophagus and stomach bottom. The echo intensity of the normal esophageal and stomach wall appear five layers, including three hyperechoic and two hypoechoic inside and out. The first hyperechoic layer is the bounder reflection of the mucosa and the gastric cavity; the second low echo is the mucosal muscularis; the third hyperechoic layer is the submucosa layer; the

fourth hypoechoic layer is the propria muscularis; and the fifth hyperechoic layer is serous echo.

5.1.3\ Measuring Method and Normal

The thickness of the lower segment of esophageal and stomach wall is measured. Single esophagus wall thickness should be less than 0.4 cm, double layer thickness should be less than 0.8 cm in normal.

5.1.4\ The Clinical Application Value

The mucous membrane surface, every layers of the esophagus and the bottom of the stomach wall, the bounder of the left hepatic lobe and stomach wall, the bounder of the left hepatic lobe, and the lower segment of the esophageal can be observed in this section.
