But if none of the present employees are suitable for the position, he will have to look outside the company. Conducting the interview

The interview must be planned to elicit information from the candidate which will enable his experience, qualifications and personal qualities to be measured against the requirements set out in the job specification. There is no one best way of sequencing an interview. A fairly typical approach would be:

1.Put the candidate at his ease – he will be nervous and you want him to relax so that he will express himself freely.

2.Explain how you are going to handle the interview.

3.Start with a brief description of the job and the company. Do not spend too long over this, especially if the candidate is a marginal one. You can elaborate at the end of the interview.

4.Use a biographical approach, invite the candidate to describe in his own words his education and career to date. Do not delve too deeply into the distant past – spend most time on the current job. Probe if necessary to ensure that the candidate is giving you the full picture. He will naturally try to gloss over any less successful episodes in his career. Get him to tell you not only what he did but why he did it. This is particularly relevant when discussing choice of career and reasons for leaving jobs. It will give you a chance to assess how well he is motivated.

5.Give him the opportunity to talk about his achievements and to explain any

setbacks.

6.Allow time at the end of the interview for him to ask questions.

The information-gathering part of the interview should last between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the level of the job.

For key jobs, a second interview by a more senior person is desirable.

Evaluating the interview

The only questions you need to answer at the end of the interview are:

·Does this candidate measure up to the job?

·How does this candidate compare with other candidates?

Qualifications are relatively easy to assess unless they have been obtained from some obscure institution. Experience should not be too difficult to evaluate once you have taken steps to assure yourself that the candidate has really done what he claims.

47

Job titles are misleading; you must have information on the actual level of responsibility and compare this with what he will be expected to do in each of the key areas of the job for which he is being considered. Information on specific tasks and achievements is helpful.

His progress to date will give you some indication of how he will perform in the future. A steady progression in line with his ambitions is obviously what you are looking for. Anyone can fail once for reasons which are not particularly blameworthy. A pattern of failure, characterized by short stays in jobs, is highly suspect. If any gaps in the candidate’s career emerge, find out where he was and what he was doing.

A candidate’s personal qualities are difficult to assess at an interview. You may be able to decide quickly whether you like his manner or not, but it is much harder to assess qualities such as drive, ability to work with other and leadership.

Interviewers are always warned about the ‘halo effect’ which means allowing a favorable impression of, for instance, a candidate’s appearance or manner to override judgement on other aspects of his character and ability. Equally dangerous is the ‘ horns effect’ by which too much attention is paid to one unattractive feature. A balanced view must be achieved, which means looking at all aspects of the candidate’s career as well as the initial impression he makes, even though this may be a very important part of the job itself.

Information on personality strengths and weaknesses can be obtained by analyzing the applicant’s career and interests. Someone with high aspirations what consistently achieved what he set out do is clearly well motivated. Someone from a poor background who has triumphed over early setback has obviously more drive than someone who has not made the most of the opportunities given to him. The candidate’s interests may indicate the extent to which he likes mixing with people and taking up leadership positions. An indication of a person’s drive and determination can be seen by how energetically he pursues his spare-time activities. Stamp collecting may sound pretty pedestrian but, if the candidate reveals that by sheer application he has become the leading authority in Britain on colonial stamps in the mid-nineteenth century, this will tell about his ability to achieve something.

Candidates can make revealing statements about themselves if you allow them to talk-they may indeed talk about themselves out of a job. If, for example, someone says that he left his last three jobs because his boss didn’t appreciate him, this suggests an inability to get on with superiors or a tendency towards paranoia or both. He has drawn attention to a pattern which could well be repeated.

Задание 15. Прочтите текст и назовите плюсы и минусы интервьюирования, с точки зрения нанимателя.

The final assessment

The evidence required to make assessment of the candidate comes from various aspects of the interview and from the letter of application or application form. It

48

needs to be looked at against the specification and summarized on an assessment form, especially if there are a number of candidates.

Dos and don’ts of interviewing

Do / Don’t

Plan the interview / Start the interview unprepared.

Establish an easy and informal / Plunge too quickly into relationship demanding questions.

Encourage the candidate to talk / Ask leading questions.

Cover the ground as planned / Jump to conclusions on inadequate evidence. Probe as necessary.

Analyse career and interests / Pay too much attention to isoreveal strengths, weaknesses and lated patterns of behavior.

Maintain control over the direction and time taken by the interview. Allow the candidate to gloss over unimportant facts / Talk too much.

Задание 2. Прочитайте и переведите рекомендации для соискателя. Read, translate and discuss the text:

The kind of job you want

The first step in a successful search for a job is to decide on the kind of job you want and the kind you are qualified for. This means that first you should answer the questions «What can I do well?» and «What do I really want to do?"

Begin by thinking about the work you can do. Include work you have been trained to do, work you have actually done, and work you enjoy doing.

Next, talk to as many people as possible about your job interests and concerns. Talk to your friends, neighbours, and your family or relatives. These contacts may help you to get more information about different jobs; to form a «network» of people interested in helping you; to find people who work (or who know people who work) in the area of your interest; each discussion will give you additional practice in expressing yourself.

Now when you know the kind of job you want, the next question to answer is «Where can I find that job?"

People use many methods of finding a job. They answer job advertisements (want ads), or apply directly to employers. Of course, some methods are better than others are.

«Want ads»(Объявления о вакансиях)

«Want ads» are job advertisements you can find in the classified advertising section of newspapers, professional or trade journals.

You should read the want ads at least for two reasons:

to learn more general information about jobs available;

to learn specific information about a particular job that is of interest to you. ' The ad may tell you about the education and work experience required for the

job; the location of the job, the working hours, and the pay. It also tells you how to apply for that particular job.

Some want ads say that certain qualifications are required, while other qualifications are preferred or hoped for. The employer will try to find someone who has all of the required and preferred qualifications. However, if no one has all the qualifications that the employer requires and prefers, he may hire someone who has only some of those qualifications. It is usually best to apply only for jobs for which you have at least all the required qualifications. However, this is not always true.

Not all want ads are easy to read. The longer a want ad is, the more money it costs to print. In order to save money, employers leave unnecessary words out of the advertisement. They also use abbreviations.
