X. Read the information about engineering and underline the facts that are new for you.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

СPeople generally have a reasonable idea of what a dentist, a lawyer or a teacher does. However, the scope of the activities covered by the term ‘engineer’ is more difficult to summarize.

Engineering is the practical application of science and math to solve problems,иand it is everywhere in the world around you. From the start to the end of each day, engineering technologies improve the ways that we communicate, work, travel, stay healthy, and entertain ourselves.

Engineers are problem-solvers who want to make things work more efficiently andбquickly and less expensively. From computer chips and satellites to medical devices and renewable energy technologies, engineering makes our modern life possible. In particular, electrical engineers and computer engineers have a wide range of study options and career paths that let them design, build,Аand manage those ideas into reality.

Engineers design products, machinery to build those products, plants in which those products are made, and the systems that ensure the quality of the products and the efficiency of the workforce and manufacturing process. Engineers design, plan, and supervise the construction of buildings, highways, and transit systems. TheyДdevelop and implement improved ways to extract, process, and use raw materials, such as petroleum and natural gas. They develop new materials that both improve the performance of products and take advantage of advances in technology. They harness the power of the sun, the Earth, atoms, and electricityИfor use in supplying the Nation’s power needs, and create millions of products using power. They analyze the impact of the products they develop or the systems they design on the environment and on people using them. Engineering knowledge is applied to improving many things, including the quality of healthcare, the safety of food products, and the operation of financial systems.

Many engineers develop new products. During the process, they consider several factors. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers specify the functional requirements precisely; design and test the robot’s components; integrate the components to produce the final design; and evaluate the design’s overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety.

3. Engineers apply…
http://www.tryengineering.org/life.php?profile=36

This process is applied to the development of many different products, such as chemicals, computers, power plants, helicopters, and toys.

Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal

Сand consumer needs.

XI. Choose the correct answer according to the information you have

read without looking back at the text. Discuss the results.

1. Engineering technologies…

a) … ensure the quality of the products.

b) … make our lives much better.

c) … are very expensive.

2.иEngineering knowledge…

a) … helps people to start the day.

b) … is applied to improving many things.

А

c) … is applied neither to designing, building, nor managing the ideas into

reality.

б

a)…the principles of science or mathematics to develop economical solutions and technical problems.

b)… the principles of mathematical science to develop economical solutions of technical problems.

c)… the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Д

XII. Work in pairs. Are the statements true or false?

1.It is difficult to overestimate the importance of engineering technologies.

2.Engineering helps people stay healthy.

3.Problem-solvers are engineers who improve things and make them work more efficiently.

4.Engineers discovered the ways of harnessing the power of the sun, the Earth, atoms to the production of electricity.

5.The process of developing new products includes some stages: specifying, designing, testing, integrating and evaluating.И

Compare your chart with others in your group asking the questions:

- What does an engineer design?

- What does an engineer develop? - What does an engineer analyze? - What does an engineer apply?

XIV*. There are some pieces of advice given by engineering students. Do you agree or disagree with them? Give your arguments.

“Engineering students should be aware that math and science

are essential for engineering, but reading the newspaper and

studying history, English, foreign languages, etc. are equally

Д

as important. Automation plays a major role in engineering

projects, soАbe sure to take plenty of software courses.” (Mark

C. Reuss)

engineer/life-engineer/mark-c-reuss-eit

И

“Don’t limit yourself; if you believe that engineering is the profession you wish to pursue then pursue it to the fullest. You’ll find it is more rewarding than you ever imagined.” (Brett Grunert) http://www.tryengineering.org/become- an-engineer/life-engineer/brett-grunert

“Do a lot of research about the different fields of study offered. In order to be successful you need to make sure that you will enjoy the major you choose.” (Samuel Russell Sorenson)

http://www.tryengineering.org/become-an-engineer/life- engineer/samuel-russell-sorenson

16

XV*. Now role-play the dialogue and say who asks the questions and what is discussed.

Q: When did you know you wanted to become an Engineer?

Student: Last semester of high school.

Q: What is your college experience like in terms of the amount of time you Сfind you need to study each day?

Student: Study time varied depending on the class. A couple of hours a day outside of class was sufficient for most classes. Some classes, especially around exam time, required a lot more study time.

Q: How did you prepare for your college experience?

Student: Since no other members of my immediate family have received a college degree, I decided that the best way to prepare for a university was to go to a community college for a couple years and then transfer

into a four year university.

Q: Did/do you have a mentor that has helped guide you thus far?

иStudent: My parents are the people that have had the most impact in

my education and career plans. They have supported me every step of the

way.

А

Q: Is there a specialty area you have focused on in engineering?

Studentб: My degree is a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineer-

ing. This degree covers a lot of the material that both Computer Science

and Electrical engineering covers. I decided on this degree while at Com-

munity College because I took software programming classes and really

enjoyed them. I also took math and science classes that I really enjoyed.

The Computer engineering degree allowed me to study both subjects and

gave me more options when finding a career.

Student: Study groups are aДstaple in college. Having a group of people, each with different strengths and weaknesses, helps a lot. If one person is kind of weak on a subject, another person in the group that is strong can help them. Individual study time is extremely important as well. If you cannot study on your own, it is very difficult to get good grades on exams.

Q: Do you find yourself studying more in a team situation or alone? И

Q: What’s the hardest thing you have found about your college experience working toward a degree in engineering?

Student: Time management is one of the hardest things about college. You need to be able to devote enough time to each class you are taking. A lot of the time exams for all your classes will fall on or around the

17

same day. If you don’t manage your time well, you won’t have enough of it to go around.

XVI. Work in pairs and answer the questions:

- When did you want to become an engineer? - What is your experience?

- Who helps and supports you?

СXVII*. Think of one of the branch of engineering, describe it to the groupmatesиand let them guess.

- How do you prefer to study: in a team or alone? - What is the hardest thing for you?

Example: I work at the plant. I’m responsible for designing and overseeing construction and operation of nuclear reactors. – Your branch is Nuclear Engineering.

I’m responsibleбfor…

My main areas of expertise are… I carry out…

I have to make sure…

A. Memorize the words from Ex. I and be ready to do a dictation.

АHOME TASK 1

B. Look through the questions and share the information on your studies. If you had any difficultiesДwith grammar, go to

http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/ and practice grammar online: http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/grammar- exercises.html .

1.When and why did you decide to get a degree in engineering?

2.Do you think you will continue studying engineering or switch to another area? Why?

3.What sort of work will you do when you graduate?

4.How many engineering institutions did you apply to? How many of them accepted you?

5.How did you decide which university to go to?

6.Did school prepare you for the work in the real world?

7.What should schoolchildren do to enter the institute/academy/university successfully?

C. Write a short story which proves the idea: “Engineering knows

how to convert scientific knowledge into technology and then technology into successful innovation.” И
