За допомогою префікса sub- утворюються терміни, що вказують на:

1. розташування під чимсь (знизу): subcutaneous- підшкірний, sub-bottom- піддонний, subconscious- підсвідомий;

2. неповну міру певної властивості: subarid - напівзасушливий, su-

В українській мові є формальний відповідник цього префікса - пре­фікс суб-, але це не означає, що терміни з префіксом sub- перекладаються тільки термінами з префіксом суб-. На українську мову вони можуть пере­кладатися наступними способами:

1. термінами з префіксом суб-: subculture- субкультура, subcontrac­tor-субпідрядник, subunit- субблок, substorm- суббуря (в іоносфері);

2. термінами з префіксом під-: subgraph - підграф, subroutine - під­програма, subset - підмножина, підгрупа, substation - підстанція, subtype -підтип;

3. термінами з префіксом до- (для прикметників) або недо- (для імен­ників та дієслів): subcritical - докритичний, to subcool - недогрівати, subcri-ticality - докритичний стан, докритичність, subsonic - дозвуковий;

4. термінами з словами, що характеризують неповноту міри власти­вості: subnormal - розумово неповноцінна людина, subacid - слабокислий, subaverage - нижче середнього;

5. термінами з словом "вторинний" та подібними словами: subboard- вторинний розподільний щиток, subshaft- вторинний вал;

6. термінами з словами, що позначають частку цілого ("частина", "елемент", "вузол", "деталь" тощо): subarray - (геол.) елемент сейсмічної групи, (косм.) панель сонячної батареї, (інф.) частина масиву; subcurcuit -частина схеми, subimage - фрагмент зображення, submotion - складова руху;

7. термінами із словом "попередній" та подібними: subassembly -попередня збірка, subfloor - "чорна" підлога, subproduct - проміжний ре­зультат;

8. термінами із словами "допоміжний", "додатковий" та подібними словами: subdish - допоміжне дзеркало (антени), subhead - накладна шпин­дельна голівка,

9. термінами із словами "місцевий", "локальний" та под.: submain -локальний каналізаційний колектор,

10) описово, шляхом розкриття змісту позначеного поняття: subcen- ter - торговий центр за межами ділової частини міста, subadult - такий, що виходить з юнацького віку, subcompact - двохдверчатий компактний авто­ мобіль.

Деякі терміни з префіксом sub- можуть перекладатися різними спо­собами в межах як однієї терміносистеми, так і в різних терміносистемах: subaqueous - підводний, субаквальний, substructure - (заг.) субструктура, підструктура, (будів.) фундамент, підземна частина (споруди), (нафт.) ос­нова, підвалина, (залізн.) нижня будова колії.
