6. Несколько прилагательных образуют степени сравнения от разных основ. Их рекомендуется запомнить:

good/well - better - (the) best – хороший - лучше - лучше всех

bad - worse - (the) worst - плохой - хуже - самый плохой, хуже всех

little – less – (the) least - маленький - меньше - самый мален., меньше всех.

much/many – more – (the) most много – больше – больше всего.

7. У некоторых прилагательных одинаково употребительны как син­те­ти­ческие, так и аналитические формы, например:

true – правдивый, верный truer/more true (the) truest/most true

hot – горячий hotter/more hot (the) hottest/most hot* (p.)

8. А некоторые в подавляющем большинстве случаев встречаются в аналитических формах:

right – правильный righter* (p.)/more right (the) most right

wrong – неправильный more wrong (the) most wrong

real – настоящий more real (the) realest*(p.)

9. Разное значение имееют степени сравнения от прилагательного old:

old – older (старше, более старый) – (the) oldest (самый старший, самый старый)

old – elder (старший в семье) – (the) eldest (самый старший в семье).

My elder sister lives in St. Petersburg. Our eldest brother is a student.

Примечание: С прилагательным elder союз than никогда не употребляется.

1. The sooner the better. 2. The more the better. 3. The sooner you do your homework, the sooner you can go outside. 4. That's much better. 5. Some­thing is better than nothing. 6. Would you like to go on a camping trip to the forest (лес)? 7. If you are going camping in the forest, there will be wild animals.

24. The thief

Helen: Hello, children. Welcome to Playtime. It's unit 24 today – "The thief". Look, I've got to post some letters, a postcard and a parcel. What's (= what is) the time? It's (= it is) a quarter to twelve. The post office closes at twelve o'clock. The post office closes at noon. I must hurry up. Why don't you (= Why do you not) watch Jack and Jill in the meantime?

Jill: They're [ðeə] (= they are) changing guard at the Buckingham Palace – Christopher Robin went down with Alice.

Jack: Shhh! Be quiet! I'm (= I am) reading.

Jill: What are you reading?

Jack: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Helen: My bike! My bike!

Catch the thief! He's (= he has) stolen my bike…

I must phone Jack and Jill and tell them that I won't (= will not) be home for lunch.

Jill: The phone is ringing.

Jack: I'm (= I am) not deaf. Go and answer the phone.

Jill: Hallo?

Helen: Hallo, Jill. I'm (= I am) sorry, I won't be home for lunch. My bike's been stolen (= has been stolen). I must go to the police.

Jill: Your bike? Where?

Helen: Near the post office. I posted my letters and the parcel. And when I came out I saw a man hurrying off with my bike.

Jill: What did he look like?

Helen: Well, he was tall with black hair, a big nose, a moustache and big glasses.

Jack: What was he wearing?

Helen: He was wearing an orange sweater ['swetə] and blue trousers.

J ack: Don't (= Do not) worry, Helen. We'll help you find your bike. Bye for now. Come on, Jill. Let's (= Let us) take a bus to the city. We must catch the thief.

Helen: Jack and Jill want to help me. How nice of them. But I must go to the police now.

One day Helen went to the post office. She went there by bike. She wanted to post some letters, a postcard and a parcel. Jack and Jill stayed at home. They were reading books. Helen parked her bike outside the post office. After a while she noticed that a thief stole her bike and rode away. She phoned Jack and Jill and told them what the thief looked like. He was tall, he had black hair, a big nose, a moustache and big glasses. He was wearing an orange sweater and blue trousers. Jack and Jill promised Helen to help her. They wanted to catch the thief. Helen went to the police.

Example:

One day Helen went to the post office.

When did Helen go to the post office? Where did Helen go one day? Who went to the post office? Did Helen go to the post office one day?

Exercise 2. Translate the following sentences into Russian:

1.  I have no time (/money). 2. I have little time (/money). 3. You must spend a little less money on sweets, cinema and ice cream. 4. I have not the least idea of it.  5. Today I have more time for you. 6. This exercise is more difficult than I expected. 7. Today the weather is much better than it was yesterday. 8. This problem is even worse than I thought. 9. Some people have it worse than me. 10. Come as soon as you can. 11. I can't wait to see this movie. 12. The more the better. 13. I haven't much time to watch TV but sometimes I spend an hour or two watching an interesting film.

Jack threw nails onto the road.

Boom!!! The tubes and tyres of the bike exploded.

The thief fell off the bike.

Jack: Look at that. There are coins everywhere.

Jill: Quick. Call the police. (To the thief) You lost your glasses.

T hief: Oh, it's you. Thank you.

Jill: Have you hurt yourself?

Thief: No, I'm fine. My leg, my leg…

Police officer: Excuse me. Is this yours?

Thief: Yes, it's mine.

Jack: No, it isn't. He's stolen the bike.

Police officer: And what about the money? "City Bank!" You're under arrest!

Helen: Jack and Jill are very good detectives, aren't they? Let's have a look at some pictures from our story now.

The thief asked Jill the way, "How do I get to the park, please?" And the thief wanted to know, "How far is it?" And here's the park where Jack and Jill want to catch the thief.

Jack said, "Let's hide behind the tree."

When the thief fell off the bike his glasses fell down too. Jill picked them up and said, "You've lost your glasses."

Jack called the police. The policeman handcuffed the thief and said, "You're [jɔ:] under arrest!" Let's have a look at our two detectives again.
