Effective thinking in business

Our business life, like our personal life, presents a steady stream of problems. Success in business depends upon how well we meet the day-by-day challenges to our thinking ability that come before us. No one has а 100 per cent score in making sound decisions, but it is possible to train ourselves so we will have a pretty high betting average.

Let us see how useful the scientific method can be in solving business problems. I hope to convince you that it is impossible to achieve a high degree of success in making sound business decisions without using a scientific approach.

The scientist does not settle things by arguing about them — he decides things by surveying the facts. Facts first then opinions. Talking does not convince him — he knows how easy it is to be misled by preconceived ideas.

The scientific method is a three-step process:

1. You use your imagination and your memory for thinking up explanation or possible solutions for your problems.

2. You analyse them logically — you try to visualize how each solution will work out. And then you are ready for the third step without which thinking is not scientific.

3. You test your idea by trying it. You let the facts speak for themselves.

В тексте встречаются бессоюзные определительные придаточные предложения (§ 128). Те места, где при переводе следует использовать слово который или его эквивалент, помечены знаком ѵ.

We change

Think of the various ways ѵ we, human beings, change as the years pass by. We start out as a fertilized ovum with all our needs supplied. At birth we are restlessly evicted without even any clothes or teeth. We try to make the best of this bad situation, and slowly and with much confusion we gradually learn to walk, to talk, and not to pull the tails of big dogs too hard. We keep growing taller and wider, get through various schools, and eventually get started making money or making babies. We stop growing taller, but more often than not keep growing wider. Wrinkles and double chins appear, and the hair that does not fall out frequently turns grey. The gallant husband will stoutly maintain that his wife is just as beautiful as the day ѵ he married her — but he will admit that it takes her longer.

From the time ѵ we are one minute old to the time ѵ we die, the things ѵ we like to do and the skills with which we do them constantly change. The foods ѵ we enjoy, the sensations ѵ we like, and the state of our blood pressure will shift from time to time. Not only ourselves but the things around us are constantly shifting, keep changing from time to time.

one minute old — основное значение слова old — старый (old people — старики; old age — старость). Это слово используется при вопросе о возрасте и указании возраста (How old is he? — Сколько ему (лет)? Не is two weeks old — Ему две недели. Не is ninety (years old) — Ему девяносто лет)
