Freight transportation is the movement of goods from point A to point B by air, truck, rail and water. The volume of freight and goods moved throughout the transportation system has grown significantly over the past few decades and is projected to increase by nearly 70 percent by 2020.
Freight transportation is one of the most vital services in modern society. It makes most of the other functions of society possible, such as manufacturing and construction, food and agriculture, energy supply and distribution, safety and security, access to medical care, and tourism and recreation.The future of the nation and the world depends critically on transportation systems that are reliable, efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable. Alongside, the role that freight transportation plays in logistics system is more complex than carrying goods for the proprietors. Its complexity can take effect only through high quality management. By means of well-handled transport system commodities could be sent to the right place at right time in order to satisfy customers’ demands. It brings efficacy and also it builds a bridge between producers and consumers. Freight transportation systems are so large and complex that in order to build the science of transportation systems it will be necessary to work on fundamental research issues in many areas, including:
• Modelling .
• Optimization, especially robust planning, on-line learning and control.
• Decomposition, especially how to decompose complex systems to facilitate
optimization and decentralized control.
• Economics and game theory.
Freight transport has a major impact on the economy‚ quality of life and attractiveness of urban areas, but it receives relatively little attention in comparison with passenger transport. Achieving an efficient and sustainable distribution system for goods and services is one of the greatest challenges facing the whole world.The freight industry also plays a significant role in ensuring that fresh food and other essential commodities are available daily in the shops and stores.Therefore freight transportation is the base of efficiency and economy in business logistics and expands other functions of the whole freight transport system.
Air freight is necessary for many industries and services to complete their supply chain and functions. It provides the delivery with speed lower risk of damage, security, flexibility, accessibility and good frequency for regular destinations, yet the disadvantage is high delivery fee.
Land logistics is a very important link in logistics activities. It extends the delivery services for air and maritime transport from airports and seaports. The most positive characteristic of land logistics is the high accessibility level in land areas. The main transport modes of land logistics are railway and road freight transport.
Railway freight transport has advantages like high carrying capacity, lower influence by weather conditions and lower energy consumption, while disadvantages as high cost of essential facilities, difficult and expensive maintenance, lack of lack of elasticity of urgent demands and time consumption in organizing railway carriages. Road freight transportation has advantages as cheaper investment funds, high accessibility, and mobility. Its disadvantages are low capacity, lower safety and slow speed.
