STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF THE USA

Each state has a constitution similar to the Constitution of the entire nation, with its three divisions of power: executive, legislative and judical. The head of each state is the governor-the chief executive officer of the state. The state legislatures are in charge of the legislative work; and the state courts take care of judicial business.

The governor is elected by direct vote of the people. His term of office varies in different states from 2 to 4 years. The state legislature consists of two Houses and controls its own state government and all local governments within the state. No state, however, may pass a law contrary to the National Constitution. The states must recognize the governments of other states and deciding who may vote, that is, how long a voter has to live in the state and so forth.

The countries maintain public order through the sheriff- the chief law enforcement officer of the country and his deputies-assistants appointed by the sheriff.

Most large cities have an elected mayor as head of the local government and an elected council to help him. Some smaller cities have a commission form of government. Five men are elected to take care of the city's services and its money problem. The mayor-council system is the most popular in the United States.
