В первую очередь мы должны сконцентрировать внимание на удовлетворении потребности членов ассоциации, ибо основная наша задача состоит в том, чтобы помогать компаниям-членам во всех вопросах ведения их бизнеса в России. Так что свой первый долг в качестве председателя Правления я вижу в том, чтобы выяснить, удовлетворены ли наши члены тем, что мы делаем, в чем они нуждаются и как нам следует улучшить работу. Этот акцент совпадает со стратегической задачей ЕДАР – улучшение торгового и делового климата в России для ее членов путем лоббирования их интересов и информационного обеспечения. Эта деятельность должна способствовать либерализации торговли и промышленности в России и их соответствию международным нормам. Ассоциация внесет свой вклад в выполнение целей, поставленных в Соглашении о партнерстве и сотрудничестве между ЕС и Россией, она будет способствовать вступлению России в ВТО, также созданию Единого европейского экономического пространства между Россией и Европейским Союзом.

Exercise 6. Find in the text one idiom with the noun hand and translate the sentence. Study the explanation of some other modern idioms with the word hand, find out Russian equivalents and then translate the sentences bellow:

Translate the following:

4. Some well-known politicians have been found to be in hand in glove with leading gangsters. He is hand and glove with the vicar (A.Christie). He works hand in glove with the writers and the directors (J.O’Hara). [ The idiom was originally hand and glove – i.e. as close as can be imagined.]

Exercise 7. Comment on the following sayings with the word hand using a dictionary if necessary:

Exercise 8. First translate the italicized word combinations then translate the whole text:

Очень серьезной станет для нас проблема присоединения к ЕС новых стран, так как нам предстоит убедить сотни компаний из этих государств, что вступление в нашу ассоциацию станет весовым вкладом в их российский бизнес. Как следствие, эти новые компании-члены существенно расширят сферы деятельности и влияние ассоциации в России. В прошлом ЕДК наладил хорошие рабочие связи с высокопоставленными российскими чиновниками в Администрации Президента, ключевых министерствах и ведомствах, в обоих высших органах законодательной власти, Центральном банке, а также в администрациях регионов и общероссийских объединениях предпринимателей. Разумеется, мы также будем сотрудничать с Представительством Европейской комиссии в России и официальными лицами ЕС в Брюсселе в определении наиболее важных проблем европейских компаний в России. Это необходимо для того, чтобы наша точка зрения могла быть использована ЕК в ходе официальных переговоров с российским Правительством. Меня очень порадовала откровенная поддержка Посла ЕС и ряда Посольств стран Европейского союза в России, которую ЕДК получил после избрания его нового руководства. Дипломаты подчеркнули свою большую заинтересованность в улучшении и расширении дальнейшего сотрудничества с нашей деловой ассоциацией. Не менее ободряет и то, что идею открытости ассоциации корпоративного управления поддержали все руководители комитетов ЕДК: это именно то, в чем они прежде всего нуждаются.

Old traditions – new prospects of BSGV

This 2004 year inaugurates the second decade of Banque Societй Generale Vostok (BSGV) presence in Russia. In fact, Societй Generale, the French banking group, entered the Russian market back in the late 19^th century when its largest branch, then Russian-Asian Bank, was set up to provide purely commercial as well as investment services. The last branch out of 175, which were operating in all parts of the Russian Empire and symbolized the success of the Russian economy and promising cooperation between the two parts of Europe, was closed down in Vladivostok in 1921.

The modern history of Societй Generale in Russia began in 1973 when a representative office was opened in Moscow. In 1993, Banque Societй Generale Vostok, a 100 percent subsidiary of the French banking group, became one of the first foreign banks to get the general license of the Central Bank of Russia.

Nowadays, Societй Generale is the 6^th banking group in the EU and the 10^th in the world by its assets. It has over 300 billion euro under management providing services to 15 million private clients all over the world and has the rating Aa3 of Moody’ s.

Until 2003, BSGV provided services only to corporate clients and achieved great results in this banking sector. The clientele includes Gazprom, LUKoil, Alrosa and others. Rendering a wide spectrum of services, the BSGV provided financing for the sum of about US$1 billion in 2001 to 2002. In 2002, the Trade Finance Magazine recognized Societй Generale as the best bank in export financing, awarding it with this honorary title for the 4^th time since the award was established in 1995. The BSGV is constantly enlarging its spheres of activity: it is extending credits now not only to large but also small and medium size businesses and its financing leasing operations on a large scale.

The bank is offering new sets of finance products, adapting them to the developing and improving Russian finance market and to the more complex needs of its clientele.

Last November the BSGV started to service individual clients. By the of 2005, the bank plans to have 26 offices in Moscow, in St. Petersburg and 2 in the regions and up to 75 thousand accounts for private customers. BSGV offers such banking services as opening and management of accounts, issuance and service of VISA plastic cards, consumer and car loans as well as mortgage.

Step by step, BSGV is successfully implementing its broad scale plans and ideas. The long-term international experience and profound knowledge of the Russian market lay a special emphasis on this bank, making it the most attractive for corporate as well as individual clients,
