"KEW GARDENS"

Kew Gardens are the most fantastic gardens in Britain. It is south-west London, near the river Thames. Kew occupies an area over 121 hectares and includes hot-houses, an ice house, a pagoda, a palace and all sorts of plants and trees.

Like many other famous places, Kew Gardens were once associated with Britain's Kings and queens.

The Gardens date back to 1720 and belonged to George II and George III. Kew was especially associated with George III. He chose this place where he went for fresh air and a rest from

London. Perhaps George III was not a very good king, but he was an excellent gardener. He created at Kew the royal pleasure gardens and a botanical centre.

Most fashionable gardens at that time had ruined temples, exo- tic buildings and statues. In Kew Gardens there is a ten-storeyed Chinese pagoda with painted wooden dragons and thousands of pieces of glass which shine in the sun

George employed a talented landscape gardener Capability Brown to improve the gardens at Kew.

During King George's reign there were many expeditions by scientists. Botanists went all over the world to look for rare plants. Collector brought back flowers, shrubs, bananas, tea, coffee, cocoa, different kinds of woods, medicines.

In 1801, someone discovered a giant water-lily in the Amazon. He tried three times to bring the seeds back to England, but they always died because of the cold, In 1849 a special hot-house was built at Kew for the water lilies.

Today you can see them. In April, the leaves are small, they grow 2 inches every night, until they measure 6 feet (2 metres) across.

Apart from rare flowers and trees, beautiful lakes and interesting buildings, one of the most fantastic sights of Kew is the bluebell wood . In late spring, you can walk for half an hour in a wood that is covered completely with a blue carpet of flowers.
