A rainy day episode

It ___ (to rain) hard the whole morning when I had to leave my house. I ___ (to want) to take my umbrella, but I ___ (to see) that out of my five umbrellas there ___ (not to be) a single one which I could use. I ___ (to decide) to take all of the five umbrellas and have them repaired. When I ___ (to go) out, my wife ___ (to ask) me to bring her umbrella back. "From 8 to 9 I ___ (to take) a walk," she ___ (to say), "and I will need (to need) it." I ___ (to go) to a repair shop. "I want to have my umbrellas repaired," I ___(to say). "I ___ (to call) for them on my way home." At one o'clock in the afternoon I ___ (to feel) hungry and ___ (to go) to the restaurant. I ___(to sit) down at a table and ___ (to order) lunch. A few minutes later a young woman with an umbrella in her hand ___ (to come) in and ___ (to sit) down at the same table. After lunch I ___ (to get) up, ___ (to take) the woman's umbrella, and ___ (to be) about to leave the restaurant. I must tell you I ___ (to be) a very absent-minded man. "This ___ (to be) my umbrella," the woman ___(to cry). "Excuse me," I ___ (to say) returning the umbrella to her. "I ___ (to be) awfully sorry." In the evening on my way home, I ___ (to call) for the umbrellas which ___ (to be) ready by that time, and ___(to go) to the nearest underground station. There I ___ (to get) into the carriage, ___ (to put) five umbrellas by my side and ___(to begin) to read a newspaper. Suddenly I ___ (to hear) a voice, "Oh, you ___ (to have) a very successful day today, haven't you?" I ___ (to look) up and ___ (to be) surprised to see the same young woman - my companion at lunch. NOT A ROBBER

A young man who lived in the suburbs of a big town in England ___ (to go) home from the railway station. It ___ (to be) a dark night and there ___ (to be) nobody in the street. He ___ (to walk) as fast as he ___ (can) when suddenly he ___ (to hear) that somebody ___ (to follow) him. The faster he ___ (to go) the faster the man behind him ___ (to follow) him. The man ___ (to start) to run and the man behind him also ___ (to start) to run. Then at last he ___ (to decide) to turn into a side-street to see what the man ___ (to do). So he ___ (to do) and ___ (to begin) to walk as fast as he ___ (can). After some time the man ___ (to look) back and ___ (to see) that the man ___ still ___ (to follow) him. "That man behind me ___ (to want) to rob me," the first man ___ (to think) and seeing a high wall around a garden he ___ (to jump) over it. The other man ___ (to jump) over the wall too. Now he ___ (to be) quite sure that the man behind him ___ (to be) a robber, but he ___ (cannot) understand why the robber ___(not to be) in a hurry to attack him. The man ___ (not to know) what to do. Then he ___ (to turn) round and ___ (to say), "What ___ you ___ (to want)? Why ___ you ___ (to follow) me?" "___ you always ___ (to go) home like this or ___ you ___ (to have) some exercise in jumping tonight?" the other man ___(to answer). "I ___ (to go) to Mr. White and the man at the station ___ (to tell) me to go after you and that I ___ (to find) the house quite easily as Mr. White ___ (to live) next door to you. Excuse me, please, but ___ you ___ (to have) some more gymnastics or ___ you ___ (to go) straight home?"
