12. Past Progressive We use the Past Progressive to talk about:

activities that continued for some time in the past:

activities that form a background for some events:

 It was raining during the whole match.

When the Past Progressive and the Past Simple appear in one sentence, the Past Progressive describes the background, and the Past Simple reports an event.

 I was sailing in middle of the sea when storm began.

Form

Past Continuous is formed in this way:
