My Family

I was born on the fifth of March in 1987 in the town of Makiyivka. My name is Ann. My family consists of 4 members: my father, mother, my elder sister and me. As you see it is not large. We love each other very much. We are friendly and sociable.

My father is a businessman. He is 45. My mother is a good-looking woman of 42. She works at school, she is a teacher.

My sister is a pretty girl of 18. Her name is Lena. This year she has finished school and entered the Institute, the Department of Sociology. She is going to be a sociologist. As far as I know this profession is rather new, but to my mind it is very interesting. It seems to me sociology is the way of understanding the world, that’s why I decided to be a sociologist as my sister did. I believe this occupation is of vital importance and I’ll be able to help a lot of people.

When my sister has some spare time, she tells me about the students’ life, exams and credit-tests, about difficulties and problems on the way to her career development.

My mother is good at cooking. On Saturdays we invite our friends or relatives to enjoy tasty things and a pleasant talk.

My grandparents are pensioners. They live not far away. We visit them very often; help them with their house-keeping.

In the evening after the working day we usually gather in the sitting-room, watch TV and discuss our problems.

Y. Read and translate the text. Make up the dialogue using the questions given after the text.

What’s Happening to the Family?

Nobody would argue that relationships in modern families are not the same as they used to be earlier. The family has changed in quality. And the main reason for this is that a woman has changed. She is not satisfied with the role of a housekeeper. She wants to have a profession; she doesn’t want to be dependent on another person. She has her own opinion, own hobby she is interested in.

And you may meet a lot of happy families based exclusively on mutual interests and respect. Among these couples there are childless as well, but it doesn’t make vacuum in the family, because each of them is self-valuable and interesting to the other. As for the question of children – each family should decide it for itself, jointly. Then even the thought of divorce won’t arise.

So whom to marry? Only the one whose way of thinking is close to yours, a man who is your friend, who respects a personality in you. But for this you have to be such.

Questions for the dialogue:

1. How many members do you have in your family?

  1. Are you pressured by your family to act in a certain way?

  2. Are your parents strict?

  3. Do your parents let you stay out late? What time do you have to be at home?

IX. Read, translate and explain your attitude to the following.

The Bible says, “Honour thy father and thy mother”. It is one of the Ten Commandments.

In the family mothers and fathers help their children in many ways, long before the children can understand about it or say, “Thank you”. As children grow older, they do many things for their fathers and mothers. Parents and children help one another. Though parents sometimes make mistakes, the children should understand that their parents are wiser and they know what is best for their children. So sons and daughters must show respect to their fathers and mothers and trust them, and obey them.

But parents should spend more time with their kids. Some adults talk to their children only when they must scold them for something. It is completely wrong. How can they expect teenagers to be open with them if they are not interested in their life? Often, parents do not understand their children because they do not really try to.

Another thing is too much control. If adults do not trust teenagers, do not see them as equals, it is only natural that teenagers behave in an irresponsible and childish way. They do what is expected of them.

XY. Read the text. Translate it into Ukrainian. Answer the questions given below.

Sociology of a Family.

The most basic of all social institutions is the family. Every human society has some sort of family system. A stable family unit is necessary because human babies require an extended period of parental attention and socialization in order to survive and become functioning members of their society. A stable family unit is also made more likely by the fact that human sexual relations are not restricted to a breeding season, as in the case with other species.

The structure of the family varies to a great extent from one society to another. The reasons for these variations have to do with other aspects of the culture and the need to fulfill basic needs.

Members of every society generally believe that their particular society’s marriage and family patterns are the most appropriate.

Unlike many other subjects studied at Institutes and Universities, the family is one of the subject students often believe they already know all about. The vast majority of people have the first-hand experience of at least one family. In fact, most people have only limited knowledge of families because their belief about the family is formed largely from their own experience. Their personal background does little to prepare them for the wide diversity of families.

Questions:

1. Do marriages in which the bride is pregnant have a higher risk of divorce?

2. Has love always been the main reason for marriage?

3. Do the majority of children today live with stepparents?

4.Do the majority of adult people live with other relatives besides their spouses and children?

5.What is the stable family?

- 23 -

6.Does people’s personal background do much to prepare them for the wide diversity of families?

7.Who has limited knowledge of families? Why?
