At the Academy

I'm a trainee. I study at the Academy of National Economy under the Government of Russian Federation. I’m a participant of the MBA Programme. We study various subjects, such as Management, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Business running policy, etc. We learn a foreign language too.

Every day, except Saturday and Sunday, we have lectures and tutorials. I usually come to the Academy at 8.45 (at a quarter to nine) and go to the class-room. I take my books and note-books out of my bag (case) and put them on the desk. The desk is at the window, in front of the teacher's table. Behind the table there is a blackboard.

At 9 o'clock the teacher comes into the room, greets us and the class begins. In midday we have a lunch break. During the break I go to the cafeteria and have lunch there. After classes I usually go home. I come home from the Academy in the evening. On Saturdays and Sundays we have no classes.

Unit 3.

Russia

Russia is my homeland. It is one of the largest countries in the world. It lies in Eastern Europe and in Asia. It’s total area is over 17 million square kms. Russia is washed by twelve seas and three oceans: the Arctic Ocean in the North, the Atlantic Ocean in the West and Pacific Ocean in the East. The Urals, the longest mountain chain, separates Europe from Asia.

There are various types of climate on the territory of Russia. Continental climate, with cold winters and mild or warm summers prevails. For example, in Volgograd we have rather mild winters and hot dry summers. Russia is a land of long rivers and deep lakes. There are many rivers in our country. The Volga is the longest river in Europe and the Yenisei and the Ob in Asia. The Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. This country is very rich in natural resources. It has deposits of coal, oil, gas, iron ore, gold, nickel, etc.

The population of Russia is about 150 million people. The Russian Federation was founded in 1991. The constitution was adopted in 1993.

Russia is a Presidential Republic. It is headed by the President. The president is elected for four years. The Russian government consists of three branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. Our parliament consists of two chambers: the Council of Federation and the Duma.

The parliament is a legislative organ of state power. The executive power belongs to the Government. The judicial branch is represented by the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court and regional courts.

The national flag of Russia is three-coloured. It has three horizontal stripes: white, blue, and red, symbolizing the Earth, the Sky, and Liberty. The hymn was created by Alexandrov and Mikhalkov. The symbol of the country is a two-headed eagle.
