Our Academy

You study at the Volgograd Physical Education Academy. It is one of the youngest in the city. It was founded in 1960 and then expanded. Now these are four buildings that house the majority of sport halls, special gyms, a weight room, classrooms and seminar rooms, large and equipped audio-visual lecture halls, faculties’ offices, administration offices, the Assembly hall, the cafeteria, two museums and the library. The library has an extensive collection of books and periodicals related to sports, textbooks and encyclopedias. There is a big reading hall where students can do their homework.

The Academy is situated in Lenin Avenue near the Central Stadium, venue of football matches and city festivities. The Academy has its own stadium with man-made covering, an indoor athletic stadium and two swimming pools (outdoor and indoor).

The Academy has two Departments: the Day-Time Department and the Correspondence Department. In the Day-Time Department there are three faculties: the Basic Preparation Faculty, Professional Preparation Faculty and Preparatory Faculty for Foreign Students. Each faculty is administered by a dean. The administrative structure of the Academy includes Rector, three assistant rectors, the Deans and the Heads of chairs. There are 18 chairs. Both faculties enrollment is 1700 students. The teaching staff covers about 200 highly qualified coaches and teachers. The chair of Football, Track-and-Field Athletics and that of Sports Management are very popular with the applicants.

The VPEA offers academic programs leading to the following degrees: Bachelor of Physical Education and Sport and Master of Physical Education and Specialist of Physical Education and Sport.

To receive Bachelor degree a student must complete the four-year study plan.

Student wishing to attain Specialist diploma must study 5 years.

To be Master of Physical Education one must complete six-year study plan. All candidates for the degree must complete writing course work.

The Academy provides a rich environment for training, research and experimentation in various sport fields. Qualified students have a possibility to continue their study at the Post-Graduate course, where they can be engaged in the research work on different specialties: “Theory and Methods of Physical Education and Sport, Sport Training and Curative Gymnastics”, “Physiology of Man”.

To be admitted to the Volgograd Physical Education Academy applicant must take entrance examinations in a chosen sport, general physical training skills, the Russian language and Biology. Most of the entering students are rated athletes and some of them have a title of Master of Sports wishing to get the higher education. To study at the VPEA is both free of charge or of charge.

The Academy attracts students from all over the country. Non-local students are provided with a dormitory situated close to the study buildings. The Medical Service helps students to maintain their health.

The academic year starts in September and ends in June. It is divided into two semesters (terms), at the end of each students take credits and exams. If the exams are passed successfully, a student is awarded with a state grant of money. The best students are awarded with a special grant as well. Students from low-income families are given aid.

Most of the students cumulate study with competitive activities. They take an active part in many competitions, sports festivals and Spartakiads. Some of them join sport clubs and national teams. That’s why the individual education is available by obtaining special permission from the coach and the Dean of the Faculty.

All other students should attend lectures, seminars and regular training sessions. Students study many theoretical subjects: Biology, Philosophy, Pedagogic, Psychology, History, Physiology, Sports Medicine, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Foreign Language and others.

All the third-year students are required to have practice of about two months at secondary schools. They hold some physical training lessons acquiring professional knowledge and skills.

The Academy trains physical training teachers and coaches in separate sports such as Track-and-Field, Weightlifting, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Rowing, Boxing, Sports Gymnastics, Modern Rhythmic Gymnastics, Aerobics, Acrobatics, Sport Dances and Chess.

The Academy is proud of its well-known record-holders, world, European and Olympic champions: A. Popov, Ye. Sadovy, V. Selkov (swimming), Y. Kudinov (marathon swimming), O. Bondarenko, E. Romanova, T. Lebedeva. E. Issinbaeva (athletics), A. Popov (kickboxing), M. Opalev (canoeing), E. Dolgopolova (rhythmic gymnastics) and many others.
