Because we are all tourists, the English of tourism feels familiar. However, it is a complex activity. Tourism comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business, and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited. The WTO employs 3 key criteria to determine if a trip is tourism: displacement (include transport), purpose, duration. Tourism lies at the centre of a matrix of industries: transportation, accommodation and catering, attractions and activities, tourist information, travel agents, tour operation. The tourism industry gives rise to many gobs that involve a wide range of personal qualities skills and knowledge. This is one of the most attractive aspects of the industry and students beginning a diploma or degree in tourism are almost guaranteed to find a job that suits their personality perfectly

2. Describe main sectors of travel and tourism industry.

The travel and tourism industry has different sectors: Tour attractions, Transport, Accommodation & catering, Tour operators, Retail (Travel agents & online), Public sector tourism. Tour attractions are places that tourists want to visit. The main attractions are historic monument, theme park, castle, natural geographic feature, ski resorts, beaches. When we look at the tourists flow, there three types of tourism: domestic tourism (people take holiday in their own country), inbound tourism (people entering the country from abroad to take holiday), outbound tourism (people leaving their country to take holiday). Working in tourism means meeting people from different countries. It also means sending people to different destination with different traditions and customs. It is important to respect & understand these different traditions and customs. Transport means ways of travelling between different places, such as trains & airplanes. There are 3 methods of travelling: air (by airplane, helicopter, and light aircraft), water (by cruise ship, liner, ferry, and hovercraft), and land (by train, bus, coach, car, and bicycle). In tourism the most important thing is not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them. Hotels try to exceed expectations in different ways. In the transport sector they can achieve this by creating something extraordinary, decorating a car for young people going to spend their honeymoon. Accommodation & catering means places to stay and the food and services that are provide there. The main of them are apartment, B&B, campsite, caravan, country house, cruise ship, farmhouse, hotel, hostel, motel, mountain refuge. Some types of accommodations are serviced (meals are provided) or self-catering (you cook your own meal). They can be divided into urban or rural, static or mobile. Tour operators are people or customers that organize and assemble the different parts of holiday or tour. Tour operators create package holiday, which include all the components necessary for holiday. In this sector the personal touch is important. Retail (Travel agents & online) are people or companies that sell the holiday or tour to the customer. Public sector tourism is government organizations that promote and develop tourism.
